Port Moresby Jacksons International Airport is the largest and busiest airport in Papua New Guinea and the sole international gateway to the Melanesian state, a country whose forbidding highland terrain makes aviation the dominant inter-regional transport mode. POM handles 40 scheduled routes to 26 nonstop destinations operated by just five airlines — a low airline-diversity figure that reflects Air Niugini's near-monopoly on both domestic and outbound international service. The airport operates two asphalt runways: a lighted 9,022 ft (2,750 m) primary runway 14L/32R and an unlighted 4,625 ft (1,410 m) crosswind 14R/32L. Elevation is 146 ft (45 m) on the hills east of Port Moresby harbour. Named for Australian flying ace Sir Douglas Jackson, the field played a pivotal role in the Pacific War as 7-Mile Airdrome, and its current terminal — expanded in 2014 — now handles around 1.5 million passengers annually. Separate international and domestic terminals sit on a shared apron. Internationally significant for its role as a unique aviation ecosystem: Port Moresby is the only Melanesian capital with direct widebody service to Singapore (SIN), Hong Kong (HKG), Manila (MNL), and Tokyo (NRT), via Air Niugini, Philippine Airlines, and occasional seasonal rotations. Australian trunk routes to Brisbane (BNE), Cairns (CNS), and Sydney (SYD) remain the backbone of international traffic, with Qantas, Virgin Australia, and Air Niugini all operating daily. The airport is also the node from which PNG's extraordinary domestic network fans into the highlands — to Mount Hagen (HGU), Goroka (GKA), Wewak (WWK), Rabaul (RAB), and dozens of grass and gravel strips that sustain entire provinces otherwise unreachable by road.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Port Moresby

Public transportation

There is no direct scheduled public bus or rail service to the terminal. Public Motor Vehicles (PMVs) — painted minibuses — operate on Airport Road a short walk outside the perimeter but are generally not recommended for foreign visitors or those with significant luggage because of safety concerns. Most international passengers rely on hotel-arranged shuttle transfers, which every major Port Moresby hotel offers.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxis queue outside both the international and domestic arrivals areas, but only airport-sanctioned or hotel-dispatched operators are considered reliable. Metered fares are inconsistent; most travelers negotiate or request fixed pricing in advance. Typical fares to the Waigani or Town business districts (8–11 km / 5–7 mi) run PGK 50–90. Evening arrivals should confirm pickup in advance.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, Thrifty, and Budget staff counters in the international terminal arrivals hall. An International Driving Permit is required together with a home-country licence. Driving is on the left. Port Moresby's security situation and unfamiliar road conditions lead most visitors — particularly short-term business travelers — to hire chauffeur-driven vehicles through their hotel or employer rather than self-drive.
