Clayton J. Lloyd International is the sole airport of Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory in the northern Leeward Islands, and despite serving a resident population of barely 16,000 it functions as a highly international gateway because of the island's role as one of the Caribbean's highest-end luxury destinations. Anguilla's resort roster — Cap Juluca, Belmond Cap Juluca, Four Seasons Anguilla, Aurora, Zemi Beach, and the Belmond La Samanna tender across to Marigot — draws a concentrated high-net-worth clientele that supports direct air service disproportionate to the island's size. A single 1,665 m (5,462 ft) asphalt runway constrains the airport to regional aircraft — ATR 42/72, Saab 340, Beechcraft King Air, and smaller business jets — with no direct long-haul service possible. The commercial network covers approximately 76 routes and 52 destinations through 20 airlines and is structured around short hops and onward connectivity: American Airlines, Silver Airways, Tradewind Aviation, interCaribbean, Cape Air, and Seaborne Airlines operate scheduled services primarily to San Juan (SJU), St. Maarten (SXM), Antigua, and Puerto Rico-based connection points. Many AXA arrivals connect from US mainland widebodies into SJU or SXM and clear the final leg on small turboprops; others arrive at SXM and transfer by fast ferry to Blowing Point, bypassing AXA entirely. The airport was renamed in 2010 for Clayton J. Lloyd, a pioneering Anguillian aviator. A multi-year runway-extension study has repeatedly examined lengthening the runway for direct US service, but environmental and geometric constraints have so far prevented implementation. AXA handles modest passenger volumes — typically 100,000–150,000 annually — but its high-value traffic mix makes it commercially significant within the Eastern Caribbean aviation network.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from The Valley

Public transportation

No scheduled public bus or shuttle service directly connects the airport to The Valley or Anguilla's resort areas. The island operates an informal shared-van system, but the vans do not serve the terminal and are not practical for arriving travelers with luggage. Nearly all visitors use taxis or pre-arranged resort transfers.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxis — typically minivans or open-air 'safari' vehicles — wait directly outside Arrivals. Fares are not metered but government-regulated by destination zone, with set rates posted at the rank and on the Anguilla Tourism Board site. Confirm the listed price with the driver before departure. Trips to The Valley run around $15, while rides to West End resorts (Cap Juluca, Altamer) cost approximately $30.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, and several local agencies including Jerry's Car Rental and Triple K operate at or near the airport. A valid home-country driving license plus a temporary BVI-style Anguillian driver's permit (AXA uses a similar system) is required; the rental company issues it for approximately $20. Driving is on the left. Booking in advance is essential, as island fleets are small and sell out in peak season.
