Luis Muñoz Marín International is the busiest airport in the Caribbean and the principal gateway to Puerto Rico, handling roughly 13.1M passengers (2024) — more than any other airport between Miami and Caracas. SJU sits 8 km (5 mi) east of Old San Juan in Carolina at 9 ft (3 m) elevation and benefits from its status as a U.S. domestic airport despite its Caribbean geography: flights to the mainland U.S. require no customs clearance, giving the airport outsized network breadth relative to its metro size. JetBlue operates its largest focus city outside New York at SJU, with more than 40 peak daily departures to Northeast and Southeast U.S. points plus intra-Caribbean service. Spirit maintains a major base, and American, Delta, United, Southwest, Frontier, and Breeze all fly substantial schedules. International carriers include Air Canada, Air Europa (Madrid non-stop), Iberia (Madrid), Avianca (Bogotá), Copa (Panama City), Condor (Frankfurt seasonal), and Eurowings Discover. The route map reaches 121 destinations across 49 airlines — the widest commercial network in the Caribbean — with a strong position in the wet-lease ACMI market as well, hosting major operational bases for cargo and charter operators. Two runways — 08/26 at 10,002 ft (3,049 m) and 10/28 at 8,016 ft (2,443 m) — support five connected terminal concourses (A, B, C, D, E), consolidated over successive renovations since the airport was privatized under a 40-year concession in 2013 to Aerostar Airport Holdings, the first privatization of a major U.S. airport under the FAA's pilot program. SJU is also notable for its role as the Caribbean's principal medical-evacuation and hurricane-recovery air bridge, handling FEMA and military operations during regional disasters.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from San Juan

Public transportation

AMA public buses depart from the departures-level curb (2nd floor) outside Terminals A and D. Routes T5 and D53 connect to Isla Verde, Condado, and Old San Juan at US$0.75 flat fare, though service is infrequent (every 30–60 minutes) and luggage handling is limited. No rail service reaches the airport.

Taxis & rideshare

Official Taxi Turístico vehicles queue outside baggage claim in Terminals A and B 24/7 on a zone-based fixed tariff — US$19 to Condado, $21 to Isla Verde, $29 to Old San Juan — posted at the dispatch stands. Uber is authorized with designated pickup zones and typically prices slightly below fixed taxi fares.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, Enterprise, Sixt, National, Alamo, Budget, Dollar, Thrifty, and Payless staff counters inside the airport garage directly across from the main terminal, reachable on foot in under 5 minutes. Advance reservation is strongly advised during winter-peak and summer-family travel; most rentals include mandatory minimum Puerto Rico auto liability insurance.
