Beira International Airport is the principal airport serving Beira, Mozambique's second-largest city and the critical commercial port for landlocked Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Zambia via the Beira Corridor rail and road networks. Located roughly 8 mi (13 km) from central Beira at just 33 ft (10 m) elevation on the low-lying Sofala coast of the Mozambique Channel, the airport serves the broader Sofala province and the Beira deep-water port hinterland. The airport's strategic role is particularly pronounced because Beira serves as the export point for Zimbabwean and Malawian tobacco, copper, and other commodities that lack an alternative coastal route — making BEW a key logistical hub for the southern African interior even though its raw passenger numbers are modest. The airport handles 8 routes across 8 destinations through 3 airlines. LAM Mozambique Airlines provides the core domestic and regional network with services to Maputo, Nampula, Tete, and Quelimane within Mozambique, plus Johannesburg in South Africa. Airlink (South Africa) and Ethiopian Airlines have also served Beira periodically. The route network concentrates on the Maputo shuttle and the Johannesburg regional link, both of which support Beira's role as an industrial and port city handling cement, sugar, and port logistics. Beira has also seen episodic disaster-relief air operations, most significantly following Cyclone Idai in March 2019 which devastated the city and used BEW as its humanitarian airlift hub. The single asphalt runway 12/30 measures 7,874 ft (2,400 m), sufficient for standard narrow-body jet operations with performance margins at Beira's hot coastal conditions. The terminal building and airside facilities were rehabilitated with international donor support following post-independence decline, and further upgrades have been undertaken after the 2019 cyclone damage. The airport is operated by Aeroportos de Moçambique (ADM), the Mozambican national airport operator.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Beira

Public transportation

No scheduled public bus or rail service directly serves Beira International Airport. The informal minibus 'chapas' network operates within central Beira but does not enter airport grounds and is not practical for international arrivals with luggage. Most travelers use taxis or pre-arranged hotel transfers.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxis queue outside the arrivals terminal and are the default option for the 8 mi (13 km) run into central Beira. Fares are negotiated rather than metered, and the price should be confirmed before departure. US dollars are sometimes accepted alongside Mozambican meticais.

Rental cars

International agencies Avis and Europcar operate at Beira, typically from desks within the arrivals hall. Advance online booking is strongly recommended for inventory and pricing. Mozambique drives on the left-hand side of the road.
