Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (HRE), formerly Harare International Airport, is the primary airport of Zimbabwe, located about 7 mi (12 km) southeast of the capital at 4,887 ft (1,489 m) elevation on the Highveld plateau. Renamed in 2017 to honour the country's long-serving first president, it is the main gateway for business, government and diplomatic traffic, and the hub of national carrier Air Zimbabwe. The airport operates a 15,502 ft (4,725 m) runway – one of Africa's longest civil runways, built during the late 1950s to accommodate the Vickers V-1000 project and never shortened – making HRE capable of handling any widebody in service under hot-and-high conditions. A 2020s terminal expansion funded by a Chinese-financed agreement with Jiangsu International lifted annual capacity to around 6 million passengers, modernising arrivals and check-in to bring Harare closer to regional standards set by Johannesburg (JNB) and Addis Ababa (ADD). Scheduled carriers include Emirates, Qatar Airways, Ethiopian, Kenya Airways, Airlink and fastjet, together with Air Zimbabwe domestic flights to Victoria Falls (VFA) and Bulawayo (BUQ). On Southern African aviation tables HRE ranks among the top airports by runway length and sits firmly in the large-airport tier. Its role combines tourism gateway functions for the Eastern Highlands and Hwange circuit, business traffic tied to mining, tobacco and finance, and humanitarian logistics for regional NGO and UN operations. The airport also handles significant diplomatic movements given Harare's position as a regional capital and host of multiple African Union and SADC ministerial events.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Harare

Public transportation

Scheduled public transport to HRE is limited; commuter combis and long-distance coaches run along the Harare–Masvingo road rather than serving the terminal directly, requiring a short local transfer to reach the check-in hall. Most travellers therefore use taxis, private transfers or hotel shuttles.

Taxis & rideshare

Registered taxis meet arrivals under an airport-regulated scheme with fares to central Harare, Borrowdale, Avondale and Chisipite displayed at the taxi desk. Rates are quoted in U.S. dollars, which circulate alongside the Zimbabwean dollar and South African rand, and cards are accepted by the larger operators. Ride-hailing via local apps is also increasingly used.

Rental cars

Avis, Europcar, Hertz and several Zimbabwean operators run desks at HRE, offering sedans, SUVs and 4x4s suited to urban driving and longer trips to Victoria Falls, Nyanga or Kruger via Beitbridge. Cross-border paperwork must be arranged in advance with the rental provider, and drivers should carry an international driving permit together with their home licence.
