John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH) is the primary commercial gateway for Ohio's capital region and the wider central Ohio market of roughly 2.5 million residents. Renamed in 2016 for astronaut and U.S. senator John Glenn, CMH consistently ranks among the top-50 busiest U.S. airports by passenger traffic and has posted record-setting years driven by the explosive growth of the Columbus metro, one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the Midwest. The airport is owned and operated by the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, which also manages nearby Rickenbacker International, a major cargo hub. CMH sits on a 2,200-acre (890 ha) site on the east side of Columbus, about 6 mi (10 km) from downtown, at an elevation of 815 ft (248 m). The single passenger terminal houses three concourses (A, B and C) with more than 30 gates, served by two parallel east-west asphalt runways measuring 10,114 ft (3,083 m) and 8,000 ft (2,438 m). A new consolidated landside terminal is under construction on the south side of the airfield and is scheduled to replace the current 1958-era facility later in the decade. Twenty-eight airlines operate from CMH, linking Columbus to 68 nonstop destinations including transatlantic service to European hubs and seasonal leisure routes to the Caribbean and Mexico. Southwest, American, Delta and United anchor the carrier mix, while Breeze, Spirit and Icelandair have expanded the international footprint. CMH's mid-continent position, easy I-70/I-270 access and strong origin-and-destination demand from corporate tenants including Intel, Honda, JPMorgan Chase and The Ohio State University underpin its role as a key Midwestern gateway (2025).

Ground transport options from Columbus

Public transportation

The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) operates Line 7, a frequent local bus service connecting CMH directly to downtown Columbus via East Broad Street. Buses depart from the ground transportation level roughly every 30 minutes on weekdays and accept the COTA mobile app, contactless bank cards or cash fares. COTA's AirConnect express service supplements Line 7 during business hours, and onward transfers at Broad and High reach the Short North, Ohio State University and the Convention Center.

Taxis & rideshare

A 24/7 taxi rank operates curbside at baggage claim on the terminal's ground level, with metered fares to downtown typically running 18 to 25 US dollars. Uber and Lyft maintain a dedicated rideshare pickup zone a short walk from baggage claim, while app-based Curb and traditional dispatchers such as Yellow Cab and German Village Taxi also serve the airport. All operators accept credit cards, and wheelchair-accessible vehicles are available on request.

Rental cars

A consolidated Rental Car Center, connected to the terminal by a free 24-hour shuttle from the ground transportation curb, houses all eight major brands under one roof: Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National and Thrifty. The facility includes dedicated ready lots, express return lanes and a fuel station, and skip-the-counter options are offered for loyalty members of most brands.
