Dallas/Fort Worth International is the largest airport in Texas by any measure and the second-largest in the world by land area — 17,207 acres (6,963 ha), a footprint larger than the island of Manhattan. Its 87.8M annual passengers make it the third-busiest U.S. airport, but the more striking statistic is its seven runways, which together support one of the densest major-airline hub operations on the planet. American Airlines runs its largest hub here, with roughly 900 daily departures — DFW is the single busiest airport in American's global network and the anchor of its domestic connecting strategy. Terminal layout is unusual: five semi-circular terminals (A, B, C, D, E) wrap around a central spine, reached by the Skylink automated people-mover that circulates every two minutes, making it one of the fastest inter-terminal connections among U.S. mega-hubs. A sixth terminal, F, is planned for completion later in the decade. DFW's international reach (265 direct routes) concentrates on Latin America — it's the #1 U.S. gateway for Mexico, Central America, and much of South America — with growing trans-Pacific service via oneworld partners Japan Airlines and Qantas, plus British Airways and Qatar Airways to the east. The airport was purpose-built in the 1970s on open ranch land between the two metros, which is why it has room its East Coast counterparts simply don't.
