Tulsa International Airport is the second-largest commercial airport in Oklahoma after Oklahoma City's Will Rogers (OKC), serving the Tulsa metropolitan area's roughly 1M residents and drawing catchment from northeastern Oklahoma, southeastern Kansas, southwestern Missouri, and northwestern Arkansas. Located 5 mi (8 km) northeast of downtown Tulsa at 677 ft (206 m) elevation, TUL handles 90 routes across 59 destinations through 25 airlines. The airport sits on a historically significant site — Tulsa was briefly the "Oil Capital of the World" during the 1920s petroleum boom, and the airport's roots trace to that era's private-aviation infrastructure supporting the oilfield services industry. No airline operates TUL as a hub, but Southwest holds the largest share of departures and uses the airport as a focus city for Oklahoma connectivity. American, Delta, United, Allegiant, Frontier, Spirit, Breeze, and Sun Country round out scheduled service. Route emphasis falls on major central and southern U.S. hubs — Dallas–Fort Worth, Atlanta, Houston, Chicago–O'Hare, Denver, Charlotte, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Detroit, Washington–Reagan — with significant leisure service to Florida (Orlando, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale), Mexico (Cancún, Puerto Vallarta), and the Caribbean. The airport handles minimal scheduled international service but supports substantial general and business aviation activity given Tulsa's historical oil industry wealth and ongoing presence of major employers including Williams Companies, ONEOK, and American Airlines' massive Tulsa Maintenance Base — the world's largest airline maintenance facility, employing roughly 5,000 workers performing heavy checks on American's mainline fleet. The airfield has three paved runways — 18L/36R at 10,000 ft (3,048 m) in concrete as the primary, 08/26 at 7,376 ft (2,249 m) in concrete as crosswind, and 18R/36L at 6,101 ft (1,860 m) in asphalt — providing significant redundancy and capacity exceeding the passenger traffic levels. A single unified terminal handles all commercial traffic, organized around two concourses (East and West) and connected by a central ticketing/check-in hall. The presence of the AA maintenance base gives TUL unusually heavy widebody activity for a mid-sized U.S. airport, with 777, 787, and A321 aircraft routinely positioned for heavy maintenance movements.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Tulsa

Public transportation

Tulsa Transit operates public bus service via Route 203, the designated airport route, connecting TUL to the Denver Avenue Station in downtown Tulsa. The bus stop is on the lower level roadway outside baggage claim. Service hours are limited (roughly 05:00 to 19:00 weekdays with reduced weekend service) and headways are 60 min, making this option practical mainly for daytime travelers with flexibility. Fare is USD 1.75 cash or via mobile app. Transfer to other Tulsa Transit routes provides broader metropolitan coverage.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxis are available on the lower level outside the baggage claim area. Tulsa Yellow Cab is the primary on-demand provider with metered fares. Typical costs run USD 25–35 to downtown Tulsa (10–15 min), USD 30–45 to south Tulsa and Jenks, USD 50–80 to Broken Arrow and Owasso, and USD 60–90 to Tulsa's more distant suburbs. Uber and Lyft both operate at TUL with designated pickup zones on the arrivals roadway and are typically 20–30% cheaper than metered taxis for shorter trips.

Rental cars

Rental car counters are conveniently located inside the terminal in the baggage claim area, with vehicles picked up from the adjacent parking garage. On-site companies include Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, and Thrifty. Pre-booking is recommended for better rates and guaranteed availability. A valid driver license and credit card are required; most foreign licenses are accepted for U.S. rentals without International Driving Permit. I-244 and I-44 provide rapid onward access to Tulsa's major highway network connecting to Oklahoma City, Dallas, Kansas City, and St. Louis.
