Owen Roberts International is the Cayman Islands' primary gateway and, by any measure applied to small-island hubs, disproportionately well-connected for a single-runway airport on a 76 sq mi (197 sq km) British Overseas Territory. Sitting 8 ft (2 m) above sea level on Grand Cayman's western shore directly south of George Town's financial district, it records 174 active routes to 129 destinations through 32 airlines — a ratio that reflects the Caymans' outsized role as a global financial-services center and premium Caribbean leisure destination rather than the resident population of roughly 85,000. Cayman Airways (KX), the national carrier, uses GCM as its sole hub and operates the bulk of inter-island service to Cayman Brac (CYB) and Little Cayman (LYB) on short Boeing 737 and Saab rotations, plus scheduled flights to Kingston, Havana, Montego Bay, Panama City, La Ceiba, and key U.S. gateways. American, Delta, United, JetBlue, Southwest, Air Canada, WestJet, Porter, and British Airways provide daily or multiple-daily links to Miami, Atlanta, Charlotte, New York–JFK, Newark, Houston, Toronto, Boston, and seasonal service to London. The airline count is more typical of mid-sized continental capitals than a small-island airport. The single asphalt runway (08/26) measures 7,021 ft (2,140 m) — long enough for 737 and A321 operations but not widebodies, which caps the airport's ultra-long-haul ceiling. A terminal expansion completed in 2019 roughly doubled passenger capacity ahead of the cruise-era tourism rebound and added dedicated U.S. CBP pre-clearance facilities. Geographically, GCM sits 480 mi (772 km) south of Miami and acts as one of the Western Caribbean's busiest per-capita gateways, punching well above its weight in both commercial traffic and business-jet movements tied to the islands' fund-administration industry and offshore legal practice.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from George Town

Public transportation

Grand Cayman's public bus network is an informal minibus system rather than a scheduled urban service, and there is no bus stop inside the terminal. The nearest pickup is a short walk from the airport, where minibuses marked by route color run toward George Town and along Seven Mile Beach. Fares are a flat KYD 2 (USD 2.50) paid in cash to the driver; buses operate roughly 06:00 to midnight with no fixed timetable.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxis queue at a dispatcher-controlled stand directly outside arrivals and operate on government-regulated zone fares rather than meters. Typical rates are USD 18–22 to George Town (10 min), USD 25–35 to Seven Mile Beach resorts (15–20 min), and USD 55–75 to East End properties (45 min). The dispatcher confirms the fixed fare before departure; surcharges apply after 24:00 and for more than three passengers.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, Budget, Dollar, Thrifty, and local operator Andy's Rent A Car staff counters directly inside the arrivals hall, with vehicles parked adjacent to the terminal — no shuttle required. Driving is on the left, and visitors must purchase a Cayman Islands visitor's driving permit (KYD 20 / USD 25) at the rental counter. Advance booking is essential during peak winter tourism months.
