Gibraltar International Airport (GIB) occupies one of the most famously constrained sites in commercial aviation, its 6,000 ft (1,829 m) runway running east–west across the narrow isthmus connecting the British Overseas Territory to Spain. Winston Churchill Avenue, the main road between Gibraltar and La Línea de la Concepción, crosses the runway at grade and is closed with traffic-light barriers for every aircraft movement, giving GIB a unique dual role as both airfield and public highway corridor. The airport is owned by the UK Ministry of Defence and managed jointly with the Government of Gibraltar, reflecting its continuing Royal Air Force role as RAF Gibraltar alongside civil operations. A modern terminal opened in 2012 handles scheduled services from British Airways, easyJet and EVA Air's partner carriers to London Heathrow (LHR), London Gatwick (LGW) and Manchester (MAN), with seasonal charter additions. Operations are weather-sensitive because the Rock of Gibraltar generates powerful levanter turbulence, making the approach into runway 09 one of the most technically demanding routine airline arrivals in Europe. Despite handling fewer than a million passengers a year, GIB ranks among the world's most strategically significant small airports: it is the only commercial field directly serving a NATO-listed strait controlling access between the Atlantic and Mediterranean, and its infrastructure scale relative to the 2.6 sq mi (6.8 sq km) territory is disproportionate. The 2023 Brexit-era talks between the UK, Spain and the EU have repeatedly cited the airport as a central element of any future Gibraltar treaty.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Gibraltar

Public transportation

The airport sits within walking distance of both central Gibraltar and the Spanish border at La Línea, with local Gibraltar Bus Company routes 5 and 10 linking the terminal to Market Place, the cable-car base and Europa Point. Cross-border passengers can walk through Spanish frontier controls in minutes and connect to Andalusian Consorcio de Transportes bus services for Algeciras and La Línea town centre.

Taxis & rideshare

A regulated taxi rank operates outside the terminal, with Gibraltar's licensed taxis offering fixed tariffs into town and panoramic Rock of Gibraltar tours that are a local institution. Fares are quoted in pounds sterling and euros, and cards are widely accepted; Spanish taxis cannot pick up on the Gibraltar side, so transfers toward Malaga or Seville require a change at the frontier.

Rental cars

A small group of rental agencies including Avis, Europcar and local operators has desks near the terminal; Gibraltar's tight street plan and restricted parking mean many visitors instead rent in La Línea or Malaga. UK, EU and international permits are all accepted, and drivers should note that Gibraltar drives on the right, aligning with Spain despite British sovereignty.
