Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport — named for the 14th-century Tangier-born geographer whose Rihla remains the most celebrated medieval Arabic travel chronicle — is Morocco's northernmost major airport and the principal aerial gateway to the Strait of Gibraltar region, where the country's industrial and logistics economy has undergone rapid expansion. Tangier is home to Africa's largest automotive manufacturing plant (Renault-Nissan's Tangier Exploitation plant, producing over 400,000 vehicles annually) and sits adjacent to Tanger Med, Africa's largest container port. The airport serves a catchment that extends across the Rif coast, the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, and northern Morocco's tourism corridor including Chefchaouen, Asilah, and Tetouan. A single 3,500 m (11,483 ft) asphalt runway and a modernized single terminal (expanded in 2022) support approximately 69 routes to 47 destinations across 20 airlines. Royal Air Maroc, the national carrier, maintains Tangier as a secondary focus city; Ryanair, EasyJet, TUI fly, Transavia, Air Arabia Maroc, Air Europa, Iberia Express, Vueling, and several European charter operators anchor international service. The network is weighted toward Spain (Madrid, Barcelona, Málaga, Seville), France (Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Nice, Toulouse), Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, and the UK, reflecting both the Moroccan diaspora in Europe and steady inbound tourism. Domestic services link Tangier to Casablanca, Marrakech, Agadir, and Rabat. Tangier's location at the southern gateway to the Strait of Gibraltar has made it a continuous point of intercontinental transit for more than 1,000 years, a history TNG extends in the aviation era. The airport was renamed for Ibn Battuta in 2006. Passenger traffic reached approximately 1.7M in 2023 and has grown strongly as Morocco's open-skies agreement with the EU has lowered entry barriers for low-cost carriers.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Tangier

Public transportation

No direct public bus or train service connects the airport to Tangier city center. The Moroccan rail network's high-speed Al Boraq line (Africa's first high-speed rail, Tangier-Casablanca in 2h 10m) operates from Tangier Ville station downtown, requiring a taxi transfer from the airport. Some hotels offer private shuttles arranged in advance.

Taxis & rideshare

Grand Taxis wait 24/7 outside Arrivals on government-regulated fixed fares. A ride to Tangier city center typically costs 100–150 MAD by day and 150–200 MAD at night. Petit taxis cannot carry passengers over municipal boundaries, so the Grand Taxi is the required category for the airport route. Confirm the fare before departure; drivers occasionally attempt higher quotes with tourists.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Budget, Europcar, and Moroccan operators including First Car and Medloc maintain desks in the Arrivals hall. Booking in advance secures better rates, particularly in summer. An International Driving Permit is recommended alongside the national license; Morocco drives on the right. Watch for extra fees if returning the car at a different city.
