Moshoeshoe I International Airport (MSU) is the sole international airport of the Kingdom of Lesotho, sited on the Mazenod plateau at 5,348 ft (1,630 m) elevation about 11 mi (18 km) south of the capital Maseru. Opened in 1986 to replace the older, cramped Mejametalana airfield on the city's outskirts, it is named for Moshoeshoe I, the founder of the Basotho nation and unifier of the mountain kingdom in the 19th century. The airport's asphalt runway is long and wide enough for narrow-body jet operations, but its high-altitude takeoff performance, combined with Lesotho's small traffic base, has kept routine jet scheduled service limited. Airlink operates the dominant route, a daily narrow-body link to Johannesburg OR Tambo (JNB) that effectively carries most international arrivals and departures. The field also supports Lesotho Defence Force aviation, medical evacuation operations, and charter flights serving Highlands Water Project construction sites and the country's diamond-mining sector. On Southern African rankings MSU is classified as a large airport by runway profile and international designation rather than traffic volume, and its role as the lone aviation gateway of a landlocked high-altitude country ringed entirely by South Africa gives it outsized national importance. The airport is a key element of Lesotho's sovereignty in transport, allowing the country to maintain an independent international border and customs presence despite being surrounded by a single neighbour, and it anchors the government's long-term ambitions to grow highland tourism around Katse Dam, Sani Pass and the Maloti-Drakensberg.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Mazenod

Public transportation

Public transport to MSU is provided mainly by shared taxi-minibuses running along the main A2 road between Maseru and Mafeteng, with drop-offs at the airport turnoff and a short connecting ride to the terminal. Services are cash-only in Lesotho loti or South African rand and not timed to flight arrivals, so most visitors prefer a pre-arranged alternative.

Taxis & rideshare

Registered 4+1 taxis and several Maseru-based private-hire companies meet scheduled flights, offering negotiated fares into Maseru, across the Maseru Bridge border post to Ladybrand, and onward to Bloemfontein or other South African destinations. Fares are payable in loti or rand, with dollars and cards sometimes accepted for longer routes.

Rental cars

Avis, Europcar and a handful of Basotho operators run counters at MSU, with sedans, SUVs and 4x4s suitable for highland driving toward Katse Dam, Semonkong or Sani Pass. Drivers should request written cross-border permission when planning to exit into South Africa, and note that Lesotho drives on the left; an international or SADC-valid licence is generally sufficient.
