Bram Fischer International Airport is the principal airport serving Bloemfontein, the judicial capital of South Africa and the administrative capital of the Free State province. Named after the anti-apartheid lawyer Bram Fischer (1908–1975) in a 2013 renaming from the former 'Bloemfontein Airport' designation, the airport is located 6 mi (10 km) east of central Bloemfontein at 4,457 ft (1,359 m) elevation on the highveld plateau. Bloemfontein holds distinctive constitutional status as South Africa's judicial capital — host of the Supreme Court of Appeal — making BFN one of only three capital-city airports in South Africa alongside Cape Town (CPT, legislative capital) and Pretoria-served Johannesburg (JNB, executive capital). The airport handles 7 routes across 4 destinations through 3 airlines. South African Airways (via subsidiary Airlink), FlySafair, and CemAir operate the core schedule dominated by the Johannesburg shuttle — a short-haul segment that accounts for the overwhelming majority of Bloemfontein's commercial traffic. Cape Town and Durban services provide the remaining domestic connections. International scheduled service is currently absent from the published schedule, although BFN retains international designation for charter flights, customs clearance, and cross-border government aviation. The airport serves the Free State's government, legal, agricultural, and educational communities (Bloemfontein hosts the University of the Free State). The airfield has two asphalt runways: 02/20 at 8,396 ft (2,560 m) and crosswind 12/30 at 7,202 ft (2,195 m). The elevation requires hot-and-high performance considerations for fully-loaded operations in South African summer. The terminal is a compact single-building facility operated by Airports Company South Africa (ACSA). Bloemfontein's role as the seat of the Supreme Court of Appeal and its historic significance as the founding location of both the African National Congress (1912) and the National Party produces a steady flow of political, legal, and diplomatic traffic through BFN.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Bloemfontain

Public transportation

No scheduled public bus or rail service directly connects the airport to central Bloemfontein. Some hotels and guest houses arrange pre-booked shuttles for their guests. The majority of travelers use taxis, ride-hailing, or rental cars.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered taxis wait at a rank directly outside the terminal building. Ride-hailing services Uber and Bolt operate at BFN and are widely used with transparent upfront pricing. The 6 mi (10 km) trip into central Bloemfontein typically takes 15 to 20 minutes.

Rental cars

Major rental agencies maintain service desks inside the arrivals hall, including Avis, Budget, Hertz, Europcar, Tempest Car Hire, and First Car Rental. Advance booking is recommended during Supreme Court sittings, parliamentary sessions, and major agricultural events. South Africa drives on the left-hand side of the road.
