Kahului Airport is the primary commercial gateway to Maui and the second-busiest airport in the State of Hawaii after Honolulu, handling roughly 7.5 million passengers annually. OGG's scale is disproportionate to its island population of 165,000 because virtually every visitor to Maui arrives through this single airport; combined with Hawaii's status as the US's most geographically isolated state, OGG functions as the terminus for one of the longest overwater commercial route networks in the world, with nonstop mainland service averaging 2,500–3,000 mi (4,000–4,800 km) from US West Coast origins. The airport is a focus operation for Hawaiian Airlines, which runs interisland 717 service to Honolulu, Kona, Lihue, and Hilo roughly every 30 minutes during the day, plus mainland 321neo service to West Coast hubs. Southwest, Alaska, United, American, and Delta operate mainland widebody and narrowbody service from Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Phoenix, Denver, Chicago, Dallas, and Portland. Westjet and Air Canada operate seasonal service from Vancouver and Calgary. Two runways serve the airport: 2/20 at 6,995 ft (2,132 m) and 5/23 at 4,990 ft (1,521 m). The main runway accommodates 787, 777, A330, and A321 operations. The airport's elevation of 54 ft (16 m) and trade-wind-exposed open-ocean approach to runway 2 make it notable among Pacific airports for its crosswind and gust conditions. OGG is notable for its open-air terminal — corridors between gates are partially roofed but not air-conditioned — a design that evokes the island climate and is rare among airports of its passenger volume.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Kahului

Public transportation

Maui Bus operates the Upcountry Islander route from the airport curbside to Kahului town and the Queen Ka'ahumanu Center shopping mall every 90 minutes from 05:30 to 20:30 for USD 2. Connections at Kahului serve Wailuku, Pa'ia, Lahaina (Ka'anapali Islander), and Kihei (Kihei Islander). No direct bus service to resort areas such as Wailea or Ka'anapali exists; transfers are required.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxis queue at the curb outside baggage claim. Metered fares run USD 30–45 to Kahului and Wailuku (10–15 min), USD 60–80 to Kihei and Wailea (25–40 min), and USD 90–130 to Ka'anapali, Kapalua, and Lahaina on the west side (45–75 min). Uber and Lyft operate from a designated rideshare pickup area and are typically 20–30% cheaper. Ride times to the west side can double during afternoon Honoapi'ilani Highway traffic.

Rental cars

A Consolidated Rent-a-Car Facility (CONRAC) sits approximately 1.5 km (1 mi) south of the terminal; complimentary shuttles run continuously from the curb outside baggage claim. Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, and Thrifty operate counters under one roof. Vehicles exit onto Hana Highway (route 36) and Mokulele Highway (route 311), reaching Wailea in 35 km (22 mi), Ka'anapali in 55 km (34 mi), and Hana in 85 km (53 mi).
