Phoenix Sky Harbor International occupies a rare position in U.S. aviation: a top-ten airport by passengers that sits inside the actual city — 5 km (3 mi) east of downtown Phoenix — rather than on a distant greenfield. That urban placement, the result of mid-20th-century land-use decisions, is functionally unique among large American airports and increasingly acts as a constraint on long-term expansion. The airport serves 49 airlines on 445 routes to 197 destinations at an elevation of 1,135 ft (346 m), with summer surface temperatures regularly exceeding 45°C (113°F), which materially affects aircraft payload and performance calculations. American Airlines operates its principal western U.S. hub here, inherited from the US Airways merger, with Southwest operating one of its largest crew bases in parallel. The dual-carrier structure — a legacy hub carrier plus a dominant point-to-point low-cost operator — is a characteristic PHX shares with few peers and contributes to unusually strong coverage of smaller western and southwestern U.S. cities. Three parallel east–west runways — 08/26 (11,489 ft / 3,502 m), 07L/25R (10,300 ft / 3,139 m), and 07R/25L (7,800 ft / 2,377 m) — allow triple-independent departures during PHX's compressed morning and evening banks. The airport's three terminals (T2 was demolished in 2020) — Terminal 3 and Terminal 4 — are linked by the free PHX Sky Train automated people-mover, which also connects to the city's Valley Metro light rail station at 44th Street and Washington. Terminal 4 is the largest by far, handling American and most international operations. PHX is the primary Sun Belt gateway to Mexico for American passengers from the Rocky Mountain and western U.S. regions, and its overall international program focuses on Canada, Mexico, and a handful of European points (London, Frankfurt).

Ground transport options from Phoenix

Public transportation

The PHX Sky Train connects Terminals 3 and 4 to the 44th Street/Washington light rail station in 5 minutes free of charge, 24/7. From there, Valley Metro Rail reaches downtown Phoenix in 15 minutes, Tempe and Mesa to the east, and Glendale to the west for $2 one-way or $4 all-day. Valley Metro bus route 13 connects to 40th Street.

Taxis & rideshare

Licensed taxis queue at dedicated stands on the ground level outside Terminals 3 and 4. Metered fares to downtown Phoenix run $20–$28 for a 10–15 minute trip, to Scottsdale $35–$45 for 20–25 minutes, and to Tempe $20. A $4 airport surcharge applies to all taxi trips. Rideshare pickups are at designated zones on the upper levels of both terminals.

Rental cars

All rental brands operate from the consolidated Rental Car Center on South 44th Street, reached by the free PHX Sky Train in about 5 minutes from either terminal. Hertz, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, National, Alamo, Dollar, Thrifty, Sixt, Fox, and Payless share the facility. Vehicles exit to the SR 202 Red Mountain Freeway and I-10 directly, placing downtown Phoenix 10 minutes northwest and the Scottsdale/Tempe corridor 15 minutes east.
