Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport is Manitoba's principal commercial airport and the seventh-busiest airport in Canada by passenger volume, serving the Winnipeg metropolitan area's roughly 834,000 residents and drawing catchment from all of Manitoba, northwestern Ontario, and parts of eastern Saskatchewan and North Dakota. Located 4 mi (6 km) west of downtown Winnipeg at 783 ft (239 m) elevation — an unusually close-in airport for a major Canadian market — YWG handles 94 routes across 55 destinations through 19 airlines. The airport is named for the Winnipeg-born aviation pioneer and aircraft manufacturer James Armstrong Richardson, founder of Canadian Airways, one of the earliest Canadian scheduled airlines. YWG is a secondary hub for Air Canada and WestJet, headquarters for Calm Air (a regional carrier serving northern Manitoba and Nunavut communities including Churchill and Rankin Inlet), and a significant operating base for Perimeter Aviation and NAC Air serving remote northern routes. U.S. service is provided by Delta (Minneapolis), United (Denver, Chicago — seasonal), and WestJet to multiple U.S. leisure destinations. The airport's strategic geographic position at roughly the continental center of North America has historically made it a major cargo and technical-stop location: YWG hosts one of FedEx Canada's largest sort facilities, Purolator's major Manitoba hub, Cargojet operations, and substantial military activity at 17 Wing Winnipeg — a Royal Canadian Air Force installation sharing the airfield that serves as home to 2 Canadian Air Division, responsible for all RCAF training. The airfield has two asphalt runways — 18/36 at 11,000 ft (3,353 m) as the primary and 13/31 at 8,841 ft (2,695 m) as crosswind — both supporting full widebody operations including An-124 and Boeing 747 freighter movements. The striking new passenger terminal opened in 2011, designed by César Pelli and Stantec with a dramatic interior prairie-landscape concept, high glass walls, and a unified modern design that replaced the 1964 original terminal. YWG's extreme winter operational capability — sustained operations at temperatures regularly below -30 °C (-22 °F) during January–February — has made it one of North America's most demanding cold-weather airports and a testing site for cold-weather aviation equipment.

Ground transport options from Winnipeg

Public transportation

Winnipeg Transit operates public bus service from the stop at the Arrivals Level outside Door 3. Route 15 (Sargent/Mountain) and Route 20 (Watt/Academy) connect YWG to downtown Winnipeg and major residential districts, with journey times of 20–30 min to downtown and a fare of CAD 3.15 cash (exact change required) or via Peggo reloadable card. Service runs roughly 05:00 to midnight. This is the most economical option, though service is less frequent on weekends and evenings.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxis are available 24/7 on the Arrivals Level outside Door 3. Unicity Taxi is the primary licensed provider, operating metered fares with typical trips running CAD 18–25 to downtown Winnipeg (15–20 min), CAD 25–40 to southern residential districts and the University of Manitoba, CAD 40–60 to Selkirk and Steinbach, and CAD 80–120 to points further afield. Uber and Lyft are both authorized and operate from a designated area on the Arrivals curb, typically offering 15–25% savings over metered taxis.

Rental cars

Rental car counters and parking are located on the main level of the airport parkade directly across the roadway from the terminal, accessible via a short covered walk. On-site companies include Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, and National/Alamo. Pre-booking is recommended given limited walk-up availability, particularly during summer tourism peak and the fall hunting season. A valid driver license and credit card are required; most foreign licenses are accepted without International Driving Permit. Winter-equipped vehicles (snow tires, block heaters, brushes) are standard from October through April. The Perimeter Highway (Route 100/101) provides rapid onward access to all Manitoba highways radiating from the provincial capital.
