Calgary International is Canada's fourth-busiest airport and the country's principal western gateway, handling roughly 19.4M passengers (2024) from a site of 20.8 sq km (8 sq mi) — making YYC the second-largest airport in Canada by land area after Montréal-Mirabel and the largest by airfield footprint west of Toronto. The airport sits 11 km (7 mi) northeast of downtown Calgary on the high plains at 3,557 ft (1,084 m) elevation, an altitude factor that shapes performance curves for long-haul departures. WestJet — Canada's second-largest airline — has its corporate headquarters and primary hub at YYC, operating Boeing 787-9 long-haul service to London-Heathrow, Dublin, Paris-CDG, Barcelona, Rome, Tokyo-Narita, and a Caribbean-Mexico leisure network. Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge maintain a substantial secondary hub with transcontinental and international service; WestJet Encore, Flair, Porter, and Lynx provide domestic coverage. International long-haul is rounded out by British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa, Air France, WestJet partners, and seasonal Icelandair. The route map reaches 142 destinations across 43 airlines, tied to Calgary's economic base in energy and to its role as gateway to Banff and the Canadian Rockies. Three runways handle operations, led by 17L/35R at 14,000 ft (4,267 m) — the longest commercial runway in Canada and among the longest in the Americas, built specifically to enable maximum-payload ultra-long-haul departures at the airport's elevation. The runway opened in 2014 as part of a C$2B expansion that also delivered a new international terminal and added roughly 10M annual passenger capacity. Two main terminals (Domestic/U.S. and International) are linked by a post-security walkway, and the U.S. preclearance facility on-site allows same-day connections into CBP-cleared U.S. destinations without re-screening.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Calgary

Public transportation

Calgary Transit Route 300 BRT express runs every 30 minutes between the airport (Arrivals doors 7–32) and downtown Calgary in 45 minutes for CA$12.50, the direct route. Route 100 connects to the McKnight-Westwinds CTrain station (15 minutes), where the Blue Line light rail continues downtown on a standard transit fare. No direct rail service reaches the terminal.

Taxis & rideshare

Licensed taxis queue 24/7 at Arrivals doors 1, 9, and 15 on a metered fare — downtown Calgary runs CA$40–50 in 20–30 minutes off-peak. Uber and Lyft pick up from designated zones at doors 3, 12, and 17 with app-based fares typically competitive with or below metered taxis.

Rental cars

The consolidated Rental Car Centre is on the Departures Level across the roadway from the Domestic Terminal, reachable on foot via covered skybridge. Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, and Thrifty maintain on-site counters; several off-site operators provide courtesy shuttles from the Ground Transportation area.
