Al Ain International Airport is the third commercial airport of the United Arab Emirates, serving Al Ain — the second-largest city of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and the UAE's 'Garden City' at the foot of the Hajar Mountains on the Oman border. Located roughly 12 mi (20 km) north of central Al Ain at 869 ft (265 m) elevation in the Buraimi oasis region, the airport complements the much larger Abu Dhabi International (AUH) and Dubai International (DXB) by handling focused regional and pilgrimage traffic rather than competing for mainstream transit markets. Al Ain holds particular cultural significance as the ancestral home of the ruling Al Nahyan family and the birthplace of the UAE's founding father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, which underscores the airport's national symbolism beyond its modest traffic volumes. The airport handles 6 routes across 6 destinations through 5 airlines. No carrier bases a hub here. flydubai operates the dominant share of capacity alongside Air Arabia, Gulf Air, and other regional operators. The route network concentrates on Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi, and Egyptian destinations — reflecting Al Ain's substantial South Asian and Egyptian expatriate population employed in the city's universities, hospitals, and public sector. Al Ain has historically been an important Hajj and Umrah charter market, with seasonal services to Jeddah and Medina supplementing the year-round scheduled network. The airport shares its ICAO identifier OMAL with its military role as a UAE Air Force and Air Defence pilot training base. The single asphalt runway 01/19 measures 13,123 ft (4,000 m), among the longest in the Gulf and specified to accommodate both civilian widebody operations and the UAE Air Force's training and transport operations. The runway length also supports Al Ain's role as an alternate and divert airfield for Dubai and Abu Dhabi during fog and weather disruptions. The terminal is a single-building facility with distinctive Islamic-architectural design elements. Al Ain's elevation and inland desert location produce some of the highest surface temperatures of any major UAE airport in summer.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Al Ain

Public transportation

A public bus service connects the airport to the main Al Ain bus station in the city centre. The stop is outside the main terminal building. Use of the service requires the 'Hafilat' rechargeable card used across Abu Dhabi Emirate public transport. Service frequency is modest and operates on a fixed schedule rather than flight-matched timings.

Taxis & rideshare

Metered, government-regulated Abu Dhabi Emirate taxis wait outside the arrivals terminal 24/7. These are the most direct and convenient option to central Al Ain or other Emirate destinations. Both standard sedans and larger family vehicles are typically available, and payment by card is widely accepted.

Rental cars

International and local rental agencies maintain counters in the arrivals hall, including Hertz, Avis, and Thrifty. Pre-booking is recommended for better rates and guaranteed availability. An International Driving Permit is typically required alongside the home-country license.
