Dubai International is the world's busiest airport for international passenger traffic — its entire operating model is oriented around one-stop long-haul connections between Europe, Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and the Americas. Almost every passenger passing through DXB in 2024 (92.3M total) was flying internationally; domestic UAE flights are negligible, which makes its position in the global rankings distinct from U.S. giants inflated by internal traffic. The airport's scale is driven by a single carrier: Emirates, which operates the world's largest fleet of Airbus A380s and Boeing 777s out of Terminal 3 — itself the largest single-airline terminal globally by floor area. Flydubai (Terminal 2) adds a dense short- and medium-haul feeder network into Central Asia, the Caucasus, and East Africa. Two parallel runways (4R/22L and 4L/22R) handle up to 80 movements per hour despite the airport's unusually dense urban setting — both runways sit within 9 km of downtown Dubai. DXB's strategic value comes from geography: its 4-hour flight radius reaches two-thirds of the world's population. Route count (269 direct destinations) places it among the top five most-connected airports on earth. A second airport, Al Maktoum International (DWC), is being expanded as the long-term successor to DXB, with passenger operations gradually shifting through the 2030s.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Dubai

Public transportation

Dubai Metro's Red Line serves DXB with two stations — Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 — linking the airport directly to Downtown Dubai, Business Bay, and Dubai Marina. Trains run every 7–10 minutes from 05:00 to midnight (with later services Thursday–Friday), fare 3–8 AED depending on zone. RTA buses (route 401/402) cover Terminal 2 and shorter city connections 24 hours.

Taxis & rideshare

Official Dubai RTA taxis queue at all three terminals with no airport surcharge beyond a 25 AED starting fare. Typical fare to Downtown is 40–60 AED (10–15 min off-peak), to Dubai Marina 80–110 AED (20–30 min). Careem and Uber operate from designated pickup zones a short walk from arrivals.

Rental cars

Rental desks line the arrivals level at all terminals — Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt, and local operators including Thrifty and Dollar. No shuttle is required; pickup is on-site within 5 minutes of clearing customs. Unlike many hub airports, DXB keeps rental fleets at each terminal rather than a consolidated remote facility.
