Kuwait International Airport is the sole commercial airport in Kuwait and the principal international gateway to the emirate, handling roughly 16M passengers (2024) across 190 weekly routes to 106 destinations on 42 airlines. KWI functions as the operational hub of Kuwait Airways, the national flag carrier founded in 1954, as well as the base of Jazeera Airways (the country's first low-cost carrier, founded 2004) and Wataniya Airways. The airport sits 15 km (9 mi) south of Kuwait City in the district of Farwaniya. KWI's infrastructure is currently in the middle of a multi-decade expansion program designed to lift capacity from roughly 12M to 50M annual passengers. Terminal 4, Jazeera Airways' dedicated facility, opened in 2018. The landmark Terminal 2 — a €4.3B, 1.2M m² (12.9M sqft) trefoil-shaped building designed by Foster + Partners to be the largest and most sustainable airport terminal in the Middle East — is under construction, with the first phase scheduled for completion in 2026. Three runways support the operation: the primary 15,026 ft (4,580 m) north-south runway is one of the longest commercial runways in the Middle East, complemented by two parallels at 11,483 ft (3,500 m) and 11,155 ft (3,400 m) permitting independent simultaneous operations. International reach reflects Kuwait's status as a major oil-economy hub and the concentration of expatriate workers from South and Southeast Asia: service to Indian cities (Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode, Hyderabad), Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Philippines operates at daily or multi-daily frequencies alongside dense service across the Gulf, the Levant, and North Africa. Long-haul widebody service reaches London, Paris, Frankfurt, Rome, New York, and Jakarta. KWI sits at 206 ft (63 m) elevation with no high-altitude performance constraints.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Kuwait City

Public transportation

Public bus service is the most economical option, with stops for Kuwait Public Transport Company (KPTC) and CityBus operators located outside the arrivals terminal. These buses connect KWI to destinations across Kuwait City, Jahra, Salmiya, and Ahmadi governorate. Service is inexpensive but less convenient for passengers with heavy luggage or unfamiliar with the route network — most overseas visitors default to taxis or ride-hailing.

Taxis & rideshare

Official airport taxis operate 24/7 outside all terminals on a fixed-fare zone system, with prices posted at the official taxi ranks. A ride to Kuwait City center typically runs KWD 5–8 in 20–30 minutes. Ride-hailing services Careem and Uber are heavily used and can be booked via their apps for pickup at designated curbside zones — generally less expensive than the official fixed fares.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, Budget, Sixt, Europcar, and several Gulf regional operators including Al Mulla and Al Ghanim have desks in the arrivals hall. Advance booking is recommended. A valid home-country driver's license, passport, credit card, and often an International Driving Permit are required. Kuwait drives on the right; driving standards are aggressive and fuel prices among the world's lowest.
