Albuquerque International Sunport is the primary commercial airport for New Mexico, serving the state's largest metropolitan area and drawing catchment from Santa Fe, Taos, and most of the Four Corners region spanning New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado. Located 3 mi (5 km) southeast of downtown Albuquerque at an unusually high 5,355 ft (1,632 m) elevation — among the highest of any major U.S. commercial airport — ABQ handles 164 routes across 110 destinations through 25 airlines. The distinctive "Sunport" branding is unique in U.S. aviation and dates to the 1939 original-terminal naming. No airline runs a hub operation at ABQ. Southwest carries the largest share of movements and uses the airport as a significant focus city; American, Delta, United, Alaska, JetBlue, Frontier, Allegiant, Spirit, Breeze, and Sun Country all operate daily or regular service. The route network emphasizes major western and southern hubs — Denver, Phoenix, Dallas, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Seattle, Houston, Atlanta, Minneapolis — with leisure service to Orlando, Chicago, Baltimore, Nashville, and seasonal Hawaii charter operations. No scheduled international commercial service currently operates, though charter flights to Mexico and the Caribbean are routine. The airfield has three concrete runways — the primary 08/26 at 13,793 ft (4,204 m), secondary 03/21 at 10,000 ft (3,048 m), and shorter 12/30 at 6,000 ft (1,829 m). The 13,793 ft main runway is unusually long among mid-sized U.S. airports, a direct consequence of the elevation-related reduced-air-density performance penalty that lengthens takeoff rolls for all aircraft in thinner high-altitude air. The single unified terminal, completed in 1989, features distinctive Pueblo Revival and Southwestern territorial architecture with adobe-style massing and vigas, and houses all commercial traffic. ABQ also serves as a primary wildland-firefighting airtanker base for the western U.S., with the federal Air Attack Base on the south side of the field supporting the interagency fire response during the April–October fire season.

Ground transport options from Albuquerque

Public transportation

ABQ RIDE Route 50 connects the Sunport to downtown Albuquerque's Alvarado Transportation Center (20–25 min; fare USD 1), where passengers can transfer to the full ABQ RIDE network and to the New Mexico Rail Runner Express commuter train, which runs north to Santa Fe (approximately 90 min). Service runs roughly 05:30 to 22:00 on weekdays with reduced weekend frequency. The bus stop is on the terminal's ground level. The Sunport is not directly connected to the Rail Runner network.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxi stands are on the ground level, west side of the baggage claim area. Albuquerque Cab Company and Yellow Cab are the primary metered operators. Typical trips run USD 22–30 to downtown Albuquerque (15–20 min), USD 30–40 to the University of New Mexico and Nob Hill, USD 130–170 to Santa Fe (65–90 min), and USD 45–65 to Rio Rancho. Uber and Lyft operate with designated pickup zones and are typically 15–25% cheaper on shorter trips.

Rental cars

A consolidated Rental Car Center sits a short distance from the main terminal, with free continuous 24/7 shuttle service from the terminal ground level (5-minute ride). All major agencies — Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Payless, Sixt, Thrifty — operate under one roof in a single purpose-built facility. The layout is one of the smoother consolidated rental operations in the western U.S.
