Adelaide Airport (ADL) is South Australia's main international gateway and Australia's fifth-busiest passenger airport, handling roughly 8 million passengers a year in pre-pandemic peak. It sits 6 km (4 mi) west of the Adelaide CBD on a low coastal plain at 20 ft (6 m) elevation, an unusually close-in location made possible by the city's Light-designed grid. ADL operates two asphalt runways: the main 05/23 at 10,171 ft (3,100 m) accepts all current widebody aircraft, while the crosswind 12/30 at 5,420 ft (1,652 m) handles light traffic. The airport serves 53 routes to 32 destinations on 15 airlines (2026), with Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar and Rex anchoring a dense domestic network to every Australian capital and mining centre. International flights include non-stops to Singapore (Singapore Airlines), Auckland (Air New Zealand), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia Airlines / AirAsia X), Doha (Qatar Airways) and Denpasar, reflecting ADL's role as the preferred entry point for visitors to the Barossa, McLaren Vale and Kangaroo Island. A single combined domestic-international terminal - Australia's first when it opened in 2005 - allows efficient connections and airside transfers. ADL is a designated alternate for Sydney and Melbourne wide-body operations and has supported major Royal Australian Air Force deployments from the adjacent RAAF Base Edinburgh's overflow. A multi-year masterplan investment programme through 2024 added a new plaza, expanded international processing and a Pullman hotel directly above the forecourt, positioning Adelaide as a competitive secondary hub on the Australia-Asia corridor. The airport has been privately operated since 1998 by Adelaide Airport Limited, a consortium including IFM Investors and AustralianSuper. ADL also houses one of Qantas's primary regional bases and serves as a significant air-cargo gateway for South Australian premium exports including tuna, wine, seafood and defence manufacturing components - the latter tied to the nearby AUKUS submarine programme at Osborne naval shipyards.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Adelaide

Public transportation

Adelaide Metro's JetBus runs routes J1, J1X and J2 from a stop to the left of the terminal forecourt, linking the airport to Adelaide Railway Station, Glenelg tram interchange and West Beach every 15-30 minutes. Fares are paid by tapping a metroCARD or contactless bank card; a 2-hour single costs about 4.15 AUD. Journey to the CBD takes 15-25 minutes.

Taxis & rideshare

A regulated taxi rank sits at the northern end of the terminal pedestrian plaza, operating 24/7. Metered fares to the CBD run 25-35 AUD in 15 minutes; a mandatory 3 AUD airport access levy is added. Uber, Didi and Ola operate from a marked rideshare zone in the short-term car park level two.

Rental cars

Avis, Budget, Hertz, Europcar, Sixt, Thrifty, Enterprise and Alamo share a counter block on the terminal ground floor opposite baggage claim, with vehicles collected from the multi-level car park walkway. Drivers should note that Adelaide's hook turns and tram priority zones downtown differ from interstate norms; the city is a natural base for day trips to the Barossa, Fleurieu and Clare Valley wine regions.
