Sydney Kingsford Smith International is Australia's busiest airport and the oldest continuously operated commercial airport in the world, with scheduled services tracing back to 1920 — a title that places it ahead of every other major airport globally by operational continuity. Located just 8 km (5 mi) south of Sydney's central business district at Mascot on the shore of Botany Bay at 21 ft (6 m) elevation, SYD handled 42M passengers in 2024 and serves roughly half of all international arrivals to Australia. The airport is the primary hub of Qantas, which anchors its entire international long-haul network here, including nonstop flights to London-Heathrow, Dallas-Fort Worth, Santiago, Johannesburg, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Vancouver — several of them among the longest scheduled flights in the world. Virgin Australia, Jetstar, and Rex Airlines run competing domestic operations, while 53 carriers in total serve 178 scheduled routes to 89 destinations. International reach covers every major Asian, European, North American, South American, and Pacific market with direct or one-stop service. Three runways operate under strict curfew between 23:00 and 06:00 to protect surrounding residential suburbs: a 12,999 ft (3,962 m) primary parallel (16R/34L), an 8,300 ft (2,530 m) cross-strip (07/25), and a 7,999 ft (2,438 m) secondary parallel (16L/34R). Three terminals — T1 International, T2 and T3 Domestic (the last leased exclusively to Qantas) — are connected by the Airport Link heavy-rail line and an internal bus shuttle. A new greenfield airport, Western Sydney (Nancy-Bird Walton) International, is scheduled to open in late 2026 as a second metropolitan gateway, but SYD will remain the dominant long-haul and premium airport for the region.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Sydney (Mascot)

Public transportation

The Airport Link train is the fastest connection to the city, with stations directly beneath both the International (T1) and Domestic (T2/T3) terminals. Trains run every 10 minutes during peak hours, reaching Central Station in around 13 minutes. Public bus routes including 400 and 420 link the airport to suburbs such as Bondi Junction and Burwood for travelers with heavier luggage or non-CBD destinations.

Taxis & rideshare

Supervised taxi ranks sit outside each terminal, with fares to the CBD typically around 45–60 AUD for a 20-minute trip. A standardized airport access fee is included in every fare leaving the site. Rideshare platforms including Uber, Didi, and Ola operate from dedicated pickup areas clearly signposted from arrivals.

Rental cars

All major brands (Avis, Hertz, Europcar, Budget, Thrifty, Enterprise, Sixt) operate desks in the arrivals halls of both International and Domestic terminals, with vehicles collected from dedicated parking bays nearby. Off-airport operators provide cheaper daily rates in exchange for a short shuttle transfer. Advance booking is important around New Year's Eve and school-holiday peaks, when fleet availability tightens sharply.
