Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta straddles the Queensland–New South Wales border — with the state boundary running diagonally across the main apron — and is Australia's sixth-busiest airport by passenger volume, handling roughly 6.5M travelers annually. The 2,492 m (8,176 ft) runway sits at just 6.4 m (21 ft) elevation on a narrow coastal strip between the Tweed River mouth and Coolangatta beach, and the airfield's cross-border status gives it one of aviation's more unusual regulatory footprints: domestic flights between Queensland and NSW technically cross a state line while still on the ground. OOL functions as the primary leisure gateway for the Gold Coast tourism corridor, handling around 28 scheduled routes to 17 destinations via about 6 airlines (2026). Jetstar and Virgin Australia dominate the domestic trunk network to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane, and Cairns; Qantas, Rex, and LinkAirways add regional depth. International service is tightly focused on the trans-Tasman market (Air New Zealand to Auckland) and short-haul Asia (AirAsia X to Kuala Lumpur, Scoot to Singapore), reflecting the market's bias toward inbound leisure traffic rather than connecting flow. A major terminal expansion completed in 2023 — the 'Project LIFT' concourse — added international departure gates, a new baggage system, and roughly doubled covered floor area. Gold Coast Airport's place in the global 534 rests on steady mid-tier throughput, dual-country jurisdiction, and its role as the leisure alternative to Brisbane (BNE) for both Queensland's Gold Coast and the Tweed Heads hinterland in NSW.

Ground transport options from Gold Coast

Public transportation

Translink buses depart from the domestic arrivals kerb. Route 777 runs express to Broadbeach South station, where the G:link light rail continues to Surfers Paradise and Southport. Route 760 connects to Varsity Lakes train station for Queensland Rail services to Brisbane, and southbound into Tweed Heads, NSW. Go Card or contactless payment accepted.

Taxis & rideshare

Gold Coast Cabs operates the dedicated taxi rank at the southern end of the terminal 24/7. Fares to Surfers Paradise run roughly A$60–75 (25 km / 16 mi, 25–35 minutes). Uber, DiDi, and Ola rideshare pickups use a separate zone at the northern end of the terminal building.

Rental cars

Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, and Thrifty maintain counters directly opposite arrivals. Pre-booking is strongly advised during school holidays and surf-season weekends. Lots sit within short walking distance of the terminal; no shuttle required.
