Guaraní International Airport (AGT) is Paraguay's second international airport, serving Ciudad del Este and the tri-border region where Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil meet at the Iguazú and Paraná rivers. Located in the Minga Guazú district roughly 19 mi (30 km) west of Ciudad del Este, it complements Asunción's Silvio Pettirossi (ASU) and is operated by DINAC, Paraguay's civil aviation authority. The airport's infrastructure is dominated by a single runway upgraded during the 2010s to handle narrow-body international operations, and a modernised terminal accommodating LATAM Paraguay, Paranair, and seasonal links to São Paulo (GRU/VCP), Lima (LIM), Panama City (PTY) and other regional capitals. AGT's commercial logic is driven by the Itaipú hydroelectric dam, the Friendship Bridge trade corridor with Brazil, and the shopping-tourism economy that sees millions of Brazilian and Argentine visitors cross at Ciudad del Este each year. On South American airport tables AGT ranks among the busier secondary-city international airports in the southern cone, often punching above its population weight thanks to commercial-traveller demand and cross-border tourism tied to Foz do Iguaçu and Puerto Iguazú. Its strategic role also includes freight movement for Ciudad del Este's electronics trade and as a diversion field for flights from Guarulhos and Asunción during severe weather. The airport's name honours the Guaraní people, whose language is one of Paraguay's two official tongues.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Ciudad del Este

Public transportation

Intercity buses along Route 2 link Ciudad del Este and Minga Guazú with the airport junction, requiring a short transfer or taxi hop to reach the terminal itself. Services are inexpensive and cash-based in guaraníes, and many cross-border travellers instead use the direct bus networks between Foz do Iguaçu's TTU, downtown Ciudad del Este and the airport via shared transfer services.

Taxis & rideshare

A licensed taxi rank operates at arrivals with fixed tariffs to Ciudad del Este, Hernandarias and the Itaipú visitor centre, and negotiated fares to Foz do Iguaçu across the Friendship Bridge. Guaraníes, Brazilian reais and U.S. dollars are commonly accepted, and drivers are accustomed to handling border-crossing logistics.

Rental cars

Major rental firms including Localiza, Movida and international affiliates maintain counters at AGT, offering sedans and SUVs suitable for Route 2 and cross-border driving. Drivers planning to cross into Brazil or Argentina must request a Carta Azul or equivalent cross-border authorisation at the time of booking; an international driving permit alongside the home licence is recommended.
