Sao Paulo-Guarulhos International, formally named Governador Andre Franco Montoro International, is the busiest airport in South America and the principal international gateway to Brazil. Located 25 km (16 mi) northeast of central Sao Paulo in the municipality of Guarulhos at 2,461 ft (750 m) elevation, GRU handled approximately 43M passengers in 2024 and dominates long-haul traffic to the continent: most flights from Europe, North America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia bound for Brazil land here before onward domestic connections. The airport is the primary hub of LATAM Brasil, which bases a substantial widebody fleet and operates an extensive long-haul network including New York, Miami, Madrid, Frankfurt, Paris, London, Lisbon, Rome, Milan, and the entire South American network. Azul Linhas Aereas operates a significant secondary hub, and GOL provides dense domestic trunk service. In total 37 airlines run 175 scheduled routes to 100 destinations, with full global reach including nonstops to Tokyo, Beijing, Addis Ababa, Doha, Dubai, Istanbul, Johannesburg, and Luanda. Two asphalt runways — a 12,139 ft (3,700 m) primary (10L/28R) and a 9,843 ft (3,000 m) secondary (10R/28L) — support three terminals under the concession of GRU Airport (a consortium led by Invepar and ACSA until its restructuring), now operated by Aena Brasil following the 2023 tender. Terminal 3, opened for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, is the country's most modern international facility and handles most widebody operations. GRU is also the largest cargo airport in South America, processing more than 400,000 tonnes of freight annually — a position underpinned by Brazil's role as one of the world's leading agricultural and aerospace exporters.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from São Paulo

Public transportation

The CPTM Airport-Express, Line 13-Jade, runs from a station a short free-shuttle ride from the terminals to Luz Station in downtown Sao Paulo, with integrated connections to the Sao Paulo Metro. Executive Airport Bus Service routes reach Tiete Bus Terminal, Praca da Republica, and Congonhas Airport (CGH) for domestic connections. Local EMTU buses offer the cheapest option, linking GRU to metro stations such as Tatuape on Metro Line 3 (Red).

Taxis & rideshare

Official pre-paid taxi services (Guarucoop) operate 24/7 from booths in the arrivals halls of all three terminals, where passengers pay a fixed fare by cash or card before boarding — a system specifically designed to prevent overcharging on one of the world's most congested airport-to-city corridors. Uber and 99 also operate from designated pickup points.

Rental cars

All major Brazilian and international operators, including Localiza, Movida, Unidas, Hertz, Avis, and Sixt, maintain desks in the arrivals areas of the terminals. Advance booking is strongly recommended during Brazilian summer peak (December–February) and Carnival, when fleet availability and prices move sharply.
