Auckland International Airport (AKL) is the largest and busiest airport in New Zealand, handling more than 70 percent of the country's international passenger traffic and around 20 million passengers annually. Serving a metropolitan population of 1.7 million — roughly a third of New Zealand — it functions as the primary hub of Air New Zealand and is the deepest long-haul gateway in the South Pacific, anchoring some of the longest scheduled flights in the world including Air New Zealand's Auckland–New York JFK and Auckland–Chicago services. AKL is operated by Auckland International Airport Limited (AIAL), a publicly listed company. The airport occupies approximately 1,500 ha (3,700 acres) at Mangere on the southern shore of the Manukau Harbour, about 21 km (13 mi) from Auckland's CBD, at an elevation of 23 ft (7 m). A single main runway, 05R/23L, at 11,926 ft (3,635 m), handles all commercial traffic, with a second 05L/23R runway under active construction and scheduled to open later in the decade. The domestic and international terminals are currently separate but linked by a covered walkway and pre-security bus; a multi-billion-dollar integrated Terminal Development project will combine them into a single processor by around 2029. Thirty-two airlines link AKL to 65 nonstop destinations, including Pacific trunk routes to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, Asian long-haul to Singapore, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Seoul, Shanghai and Taipei, transpacific service to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vancouver, Houston and New York, and dense regional flying to Nadi, Apia, Nukuʻalofa, Rarotonga and Papeete. Its combination of long-haul reach, domestic feed and South Pacific dominance makes AKL one of the defining airports of the Asia-Pacific (2025).

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Auckland

Public transportation

The AirportLink bus provides a frequent high-capacity service between both AKL terminals and Puhinui Station, where passengers transfer to the Eastern Line train for a 45- to 50-minute end-to-end journey to Britomart in downtown Auckland. An AT HOP contactless card — sold at a visitor desk inside the terminal — is required for both services and halves fares compared to cash. The SkyDrive coach provides an alternative direct service to the CBD, and scheduled AT Metro city buses also serve nearby Mangere and the Manukau interchange.

Taxis & rideshare

Licensed taxi ranks operate 24/7 outside the arrivals area of both terminals, with metered fares to the CBD typically 75 to 95 NZD and a journey time of 30 to 60 minutes. Uber, Ola and Zoomy all collect from a dedicated rideshare zone, usually 10 to 25 percent cheaper than taxis. Airport-approved shuttle operators such as Super Shuttle offer door-to-door shared vans on a per-passenger basis and can be pre-booked online.

Rental cars

All major international brands — Hertz, Avis, Budget, Europcar, Enterprise, Thrifty, Sixt — and New Zealand operators like GO Rentals, Apex and Ezy maintain counters in the arrivals halls of both terminals, with on-airport pickup for most and a short free shuttle to off-airport lots for a few budget brands. Driving is on the left; a home-country licence in English or a certified translation is accepted for stays under 12 months. Advance online booking is strongly recommended during the November–February peak.
