Sir Seretse Khama International Airport is the principal airport of Botswana, named after the country's founding president and serving Gaborone, the national capital. Located roughly 9 mi (15 km) north of central Gaborone at 3,299 ft (1,006 m) elevation on the edge of the Kalahari, the airport is one of several international airports in Botswana alongside Maun (MUB) for the Okavango Delta safari market, Kasane (BBK) for Chobe, and Francistown (FRW) for the northeast. GBE itself functions primarily as the capital-city air gateway handling government, business, and regional traffic rather than the bulk of the country's safari tourism flows. The airport handles 14 routes across 11 destinations through 5 airlines. Air Botswana, the national flag carrier, operates the core regional network from GBE. The route pattern concentrates on Southern African connections: Johannesburg is the anchor market, served by Air Botswana, Airlink, and South African Airways with frequent daily flights; Cape Town, Harare, Lusaka, Durban, and Windhoek round out the regional network. Ethiopian Airlines provides the continental long-haul link via Addis Ababa, connecting Gaborone to the Ethiopian hub and onward to Europe, Asia, and North America. The single concrete runway 08/26 measures 13,123 ft (4,000 m), long enough for any commercial widebody aircraft despite the elevation-related hot-and-high takeoff performance penalty that constrains operations in Botswana's summer months. The terminal is a modest single-building facility that has been incrementally upgraded since the airport's 1984 dedication under President Quett Masire. Botswana's Beef Export Division and diamond-industry cargo traffic produce measurable freight movements alongside the passenger operation, reflecting the airport's role supporting two pillar industries of the national economy.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Gaborone

Public transportation

There is no dedicated public bus or train service connecting Sir Seretse Khama International to central Gaborone. Some hotels and guest houses arrange pre-booked shuttles for their guests; these should be reserved at booking time. The majority of travelers use private taxis or rental cars.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxis identifiable by their blue license plates wait outside the arrivals terminal. Fares are typically negotiated rather than metered, and the price should be agreed before departure. The 9 mi (15 km) trip into central Gaborone takes 15 to 25 minutes. Ride-hailing apps have limited but growing presence in Gaborone.

Rental cars

Major international agencies including Avis, Budget, Europcar, and Hertz operate service desks within the arrivals hall. Advance booking is recommended during peak travel and regional conference seasons. An International Driving Permit may be required alongside the home-country license. Botswana drives on the left-hand side of the road (consistent with British colonial-era rules).
