Belfast International Airport is the largest airport in Northern Ireland by passenger volume and annual movements, serving the Belfast metropolitan area's roughly 635,000 residents and drawing catchment from across the province and parts of the Republic of Ireland's border counties. Located 13 mi (21 km) northwest of Belfast city center at 268 ft (82 m) elevation near the village of Aldergrove in County Antrim, BFS handles 96 routes across 54 destinations through 7 airlines — a destination count unusually high relative to airline count, reflecting the route network's concentration among a small number of LCC and charter operators serving high-volume UK and Mediterranean leisure markets. EasyJet operates BFS as one of its UK bases and the dominant carrier by departures, with a mix of British and European leisure service. Jet2 runs an equally significant operation focused on Mediterranean and Canary Islands leisure destinations with its signature vertically integrated package-holiday model. Ryanair, TUI Airways, KLM (the sole full-service scheduled operator with Amsterdam service supporting business connectivity), and charter operator Titan Airways round out scheduled service. Destinations concentrate on London-area airports (particularly Luton, Stansted, and Gatwick), Scottish hubs (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness), Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Bristol, plus the full Mediterranean summer ladder — Málaga, Alicante, Palma, Ibiza, Faro, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Gran Canaria — and year-round service to Kraków, Warsaw, Prague, and Amsterdam. The airfield has two asphalt runways — 07/25 at 9,121 ft (2,780 m) as the primary and 17/35 at 6,204 ft (1,891 m) as crosswind — capable of full narrowbody operations and historically significant for transatlantic ferry flights. A single passenger terminal, rebuilt and expanded in stages through the 1990s and 2000s, handles all commercial traffic. BFS shares its airfield with RAF Aldergrove, a Royal Air Force and Army Air Corps installation that operates rotary-wing assets including Islander surveillance aircraft — a dual-use arrangement that traces back to the airport's origins as a World War II RAF training base. George Best Belfast City (BHD), closer to the city center, handles competing domestic traffic but has significantly lower overall volume than BFS.

Ground transport options from Belfast

Public transportation

Translink operates the Airport Express 300 bus service, a dedicated 24/7 coach link between BFS and the Belfast Europa Buscentre adjacent to Great Victoria Street rail station and the Grand Central Hotel. Service runs every 10–20 min during daytime and roughly hourly overnight, with journey time of 35–45 min and a fare around GBP 9.50 single or GBP 15 return. Ulsterbus route 109A serves Lisburn, and the Airporter A2 coach runs dedicated service to Derry/Londonderry (about 90 min). All bus stops are directly in front of the terminal.

Taxis & rideshare

The official Belfast International Airport Taxis concession operates 24/7 from a dedicated rank directly outside the terminal exit, with a booking desk in the arrivals hall. Typical fares are GBP 35–45 to central Belfast (25–35 min via the M2 motorway), GBP 40–55 to Lisburn and south Belfast, GBP 60–80 to Antrim Coast destinations including Carrickfergus and Larne, and GBP 100–140 to Derry/Londonderry (90 min). Uber has not historically operated in Belfast, and private hire services such as Value Cabs and Fonacab require advance booking via app or phone for return journeys.

Rental cars

Major international car rental companies — Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, and Enterprise — maintain desks in the arrivals hall. After paperwork, vehicles are collected from a dedicated rental car area a short walk from the terminal building. Pre-booking online is recommended for better rates and guaranteed availability, especially during summer peak. A valid driver license and credit card are required; most UK and EU licenses are accepted without International Driving Permit. The M2 motorway provides direct southbound access to Belfast and the A26 northbound toward the Antrim Coast.
