London Stansted is the United Kingdom's fourth-busiest airport and Europe's largest single-runway airport by passenger traffic, serving 212 destinations across 39 airlines from one strip of 10,003 ft (3,049 m) asphalt. STN's high route count from a minimal runway footprint is structural: the airport is Ryanair's largest base globally, with 40+ based aircraft and a schedule engineered to extract maximum turnarounds from the airfield's slot allocation. Ryanair accounts for roughly 80% of Stansted's seats and treats STN as its primary London station, operating high-frequency point-to-point service across the European periphery — Ireland, Iberia, Italy, Central Europe, the Balkans, Morocco, and Scandinavia. easyJet, Jet2, TUI, Pegasus, and Emirates' fifth-freedom Dubai service complete the schedule. The airport's low-cost focus is intentional: since 1991 STN has been positioned as London's LCC alternative to the slot-constrained Heathrow and Gatwick, and the Norman Foster-designed terminal (opened 1991) was one of the first purpose-built low-cost terminals anywhere in the world — a single airy hall with a satellite pier reached by airside transit. STN sits at 348 ft (106 m) elevation 64 km northeast of central London in Essex, the furthest of London's major airports from the city center. The single runway's capacity is limited by planning permission rather than infrastructure; MAG (the airport owner) has repeatedly proposed a second runway, most recently under the mid-2020s masterplan that was scaled back following planning-inspectorate review. Stansted is the largest airport in the world operating with a single runway by a substantial margin, and its ability to sustain 212 destinations on one strip is a direct consequence of Ryanair's ultra-short-turn operational model.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from London

Public transportation

The Stansted Express train runs nonstop from the airport station beneath the terminal to London Liverpool Street in 47 minutes for £22.70, with departures every 15–30 minutes from 05:30 to 00:30. Greater Anglia regional services also serve Cambridge and East Anglia destinations. National Express coaches operate 24/7 to London Victoria, Stratford, and Liverpool Street for £12–17 in 90–120 minutes. Local buses connect to Bishop's Stortford, Harlow, and Cambridge.

Taxis & rideshare

The official 24/7 taxi service is provided by StreetCars, bookable online or at the taxi desk in the international arrivals hall. Central London typically runs £95–140 in 70–100 minutes off-peak depending on destination, extending past 2 hours during M11 rush hour. Uber operates with licensed drivers from a designated pickup zone with app-based pricing; Addison Lee is commonly used for pre-booked executive transfers.

Rental cars

Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, and Sixt operate from the Car Rental Village with a free 5-minute shuttle bus from the terminal forecourt running every 10–15 minutes. Given STN's position at the M11/A120 junction, one-way rentals to Cambridge, Norwich, and East Anglia destinations are common. Pre-booking is strongly advised during UK school holidays when LCC leisure demand peaks.
