César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport is the principal air gateway to Lanzarote, the easternmost of Spain's Canary Islands, located in San Bartolomé roughly 3 mi (5 km) southwest of the capital Arrecife and 78 mi (125 km) off the Moroccan coast. The airport ranks among Spain's busiest by passenger volume and sits firmly in the upper tier of Europe's leisure gateways, moving a network of 142 routes to 79 destinations operated by 40 airlines — an airline count unusually high for an island airport of its size and a signature of the pan-European inbound-charter and low-cost model that dominates the Canaries. No carrier runs a scheduled hub at ACE; instead, the route map is shaped by seasonal and year-round leisure traffic from the UK, Germany, Ireland, the Nordics, the Benelux, and mainland Spain. Binter Canarias, Canaryfly, Iberia Express, Vueling, Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2, TUI Airways, British Airways, Eurowings, Condor, Lufthansa, KLM, and Transavia all serve the airport, alongside a long tail of Nordic and Central European holiday carriers. Domestic Canarian hops to Gran Canaria, Tenerife Norte, Fuerteventura, and La Palma tie the island into the regional inter-island network operated predominantly by Binter's ATR turboprops. The airfield has a single asphalt runway, 03/21, at 7,874 ft (2,400 m), adequate for Boeing 757/767 and Airbus A320/A321 widebody-feeder operations typical of Canaries charter traffic. Two passenger terminals handle separated traffic: T1 takes international and non-Schengen operations, T2 is dedicated to inter-island and domestic Spanish flights. The airport is named after the Lanzarote-born artist, architect, and conservationist César Manrique, whose influence is visible across the island's building codes. ACE also carries a distinct cultural-heritage significance as the original site of the pioneering 1946 Guasimeta airfield. Elevation is 46 ft (14 m).

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from San Bartolomé

Public transportation

Intercity buses — known locally as guaguas and operated by IntercityBus Lanzarote (Arrecife Bus) — depart from stops directly outside the Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 arrivals halls. Route 22 runs to Arrecife (15 min, approximately EUR 1.40), where transfers connect to the rest of the island. Route 161 is the primary tourist line linking the airport to the south-coast resorts of Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca. Route 23 is an express to Arrecife with fewer stops. Services typically run 07:00 to 23:00 with 20- to 60-minute headways depending on line and time of day.

Taxis & rideshare

Official metered taxi ranks sit directly outside both terminals with 24/7 availability. Fares are regulated by the Cabildo de Lanzarote on a zoned-and-metered basis. Typical one-way fares run approximately EUR 8–12 to Arrecife, EUR 18–25 to Puerto del Carmen, EUR 35–45 to Costa Teguise, and EUR 50–60 to Playa Blanca. A night and holiday surcharge applies. Luggage surcharges are standard. Meter tampering is uncommon but passengers should confirm the estimated fare before departure.

Rental cars

Rental-car desks line the arrivals halls of both terminals, including major international brands (Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Europcar, Enterprise) and Canaries-based specialists (Cicar, Cabrera Medina, Goldcar, Autoreisen, PlusCar). Canary Islands rental rates are among the lowest in Europe, a function of the islands' special tax status and high tourism volume. Most vehicles are collected from the outdoor lots a short walk from the terminals. Advance booking is essential during peak winter and summer seasons — Lanzarote's walkable resort towns aside, rental cars are the standard way to access the volcanic interior and Timanfaya National Park.
