Bujumbura Melchior Ndadaye International Airport is the principal international airport of Burundi, named after the country's first democratically-elected president Melchior Ndadaye, whose October 1993 assassination triggered the Burundian Civil War. Located in Bujumbura Rural Province 7 mi (11 km) northwest of the economic capital Bujumbura at 2,582 ft (787 m) elevation on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, the airport serves as Burundi's sole international gateway. Although the country's political capital was shifted to Gitega in 2019, Bujumbura retains its status as the economic centre and remains the focus of Burundi's commercial aviation. The airport's ICAO identifier HBBA reflects the Burundian national registration. The airport handles 7 routes across 6 destinations through 6 airlines. No carrier operates a hub here. Brussels Airlines provides the flagship European long-haul link to Brussels (typically via Kigali or Entebbe), Ethiopian Airlines connects via Addis Ababa, Kenya Airways via Nairobi, RwandAir via Kigali, Uganda Airlines via Entebbe, and Turkish Airlines via Istanbul. The network concentrates on the East African Community capitals (Nairobi, Kigali, Entebbe) that provide onward continental and intercontinental connections, plus the Brussels long-haul that reflects Burundi's Belgian colonial-era ties. Air Burundi, the former flag carrier, has not operated scheduled services for over a decade. The primary asphalt runway 17/35 measures 11,811 ft (3,600 m), long enough for all widebody operations including the Boeing 787s occasionally operating the Brussels and Istanbul services. A secondary runway 02/20 is of unknown length and unlit. The terminal is a modest single-building facility that has been periodically upgraded but remains small by regional standards. BJM handles both civil and selected military operations and has historically served as a hub for UN peacekeeping (ONUB, BINUB) and African Union aviation related to Burundi's long instability. Bujumbura's position on the northern shore of Lake Tanganyika at the foot of the Congo-Nile Ridge produces operationally relevant weather patterns during the rainy seasons.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Bujumbura

Public transportation

No formal scheduled public bus or rail service connects Bujumbura airport to the city. Informal minibuses operate within the capital but do not have a dedicated airport stop and are not convenient for international arrivals. Taxis, motorcycle taxis, and hotel shuttles dominate the market.

Taxis & rideshare

Unmetered taxis wait outside arrivals and are the most common option for reaching central Bujumbura (roughly 15 to 25 minutes). Fares must be negotiated and agreed before departure. Motorcycle taxis ('moto-taxis') are available and cheaper but suited only to single travelers with light luggage. Hotel pre-booked transfers are widely used.

Rental cars

A limited number of local rental companies operate; international brands have minimal presence. Advance booking is strongly recommended. An International Driving Permit is typically required. Chauffeur-driven hire is the standard and recommended option for visitors unfamiliar with local roads and driving conditions.
