Kigali International Airport is the principal airport of Rwanda and the primary hub of RwandAir, whose exceptional route expansion over the last decade has positioned Kigali as one of the fastest-growing aviation hubs in sub-Saharan Africa. KGL handles 35 scheduled routes to 26 nonstop destinations operated by 13 airlines, a remarkable network breadth for a country of 13 million people and one of the smallest land areas of any African state with major international aviation. The airport operates a single 11,483 ft (3,500 m) lighted asphalt runway 10/28 at 4,859 ft (1,481 m) elevation — a substantial hot-and-high altitude that meaningfully affects aircraft performance and makes KGL's 3,500 m strip proportionally shorter in effective terms than at sea-level airports. RwandAir maintains its hub and overnight maintenance base here, operating Boeing 737, Airbus A330, and CRJ-900 aircraft on a network reaching Brussels, London-Heathrow, Paris-CDG, Dubai, Doha, Mumbai, Guangzhou, Tel Aviv, and every major city in eastern and central Africa. Internationally significant for its role in Rwanda's aviation-policy-driven economic diversification: bilateral open-skies agreements, corporate-hub positioning for the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), and RwandAir's unusual alignment as a Qatar Airways partner (Qatar owns 49% of the airline and 60% of the planned new Bugesera International Airport, currently under construction 25 km / 16 mi south of Kigali and scheduled to supersede KGL from its projected 2028 opening). Kigali's airport is additionally significant as a hub for MONUSCO and African Union peacekeeping operations in the eastern DRC and the Sahel.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Kigali

Public transportation

Kigali's organized municipal bus network operates a stop within short walking distance of the terminal. Travel requires the Kigali Bus Services 'Tap & Go' contactless smartcard, which must be purchased and topped up in advance — available at vendors near the airport bus stop and across the city. Standard fares run RWF 220–430 per journey. Service is reliable but infrequent after 21:00.

Taxis & rideshare

Official airport taxis queue 24/7 outside arrivals. Yego Cabs (the Rwandan ride-hailing operator) and VW Move (the Volkswagen–Rwanda mobility platform) both operate metered airport service via smartphone app with in-app payment. Moto-taxis (motorcycle taxis), ubiquitous in Kigali, wait just outside the main parking area and offer the cheapest option for solo travelers with light luggage.

Rental cars

Europcar and a mix of local Rwandan rental firms operate desks in the arrivals hall. Self-drive vehicles range from small sedans to 4x4s suited for Nyungwe and Volcanoes National Park excursions. A valid International Driving Permit is strongly recommended. Rwanda drives on the right. The KN 5 Road connects KGL directly to central Kigali in 10–15 minutes.
