Julius Nyerere International Airport is the principal commercial airport of Tanzania and the busiest in the country, handling roughly 2.9 million passengers annually. Named for Tanzania's founding president, Julius Kambarage Nyerere, DAR serves the nation's commercial capital and largest city — home to 7 million people and the economic engine of East Africa outside Nairobi — and functions as the primary international gateway for a country whose tourism economy draws heavily on Kilimanjaro, Serengeti, and Zanzibar. A large share of DAR's international traffic connects onward to Kilimanjaro (JRO) or Zanzibar (ZNZ) via Air Tanzania, Precision Air, or Coastal Aviation. DAR is a hub for Air Tanzania, which operates 787-8, A220, and Q400 equipment to regional African destinations, Mumbai, Guangzhou, and Dubai, and is served by Emirates, Qatar Airways, Ethiopian, Kenya Airways, Turkish, KLM, Swiss, and Rwandair. The airport's Terminal 3, opened in 2019, added significant capacity and is one of the larger modern terminals in sub-Saharan Africa outside Johannesburg, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, and Lagos. A single runway, 05/23, measures 9,843 ft (3,000 m) and handles widebody operations including 787, A330, and 777. The airport sits 12 km (7.5 mi) southwest of downtown Dar es Salaam at an elevation of 182 ft (55 m), essentially at sea level on the Indian Ocean coast. Two passenger terminals operate in parallel: Terminal 2 handles most domestic and some regional African services, while the new Terminal 3 handles intercontinental and major regional flights.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Dar es Salaam

Public transportation

Dar es Salaam's DART (Dar Rapid Transit) bus rapid transit system does not directly serve the airport; the nearest DART station is Kariakoo or Morocco, reached via a taxi or local dala-dala minibus transfer. Dala-dala minibuses operate from the airport road to the city center for TZS 500–1,000 (USD 0.20–0.40) but are not tourist-oriented and do not carry large luggage.

Taxis & rideshare

Licensed taxis are available at the rank outside Arrivals at both Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. Fares to downtown Dar es Salaam run TZS 30,000–50,000 (USD 12–20) for a 25–40 minute trip depending on traffic, which can be severe on Nyerere Road during peak hours. Fares are negotiated rather than metered; agreeing on a price before departure is standard. Uber, Bolt, and Little operate in Dar es Salaam and are often significantly cheaper.

Rental cars

Rental counters at DAR are limited compared to North American and European norms; Avis, Europcar, Green Car Rentals, and a number of local operators serve the airport. Many visitors traveling to safari destinations arrange vehicles with driver rather than self-drive. From the airport, Nyerere Road connects directly to central Dar es Salaam, and Kilwa Road runs south toward the Southern Highlands; driving is on the left.
