Broome International Airport is the principal airport of Western Australia's Kimberley region, one of the largest, most remote, and least densely populated regions in the world — roughly 164,000 sq mi (423,000 sq km) with a permanent population of about 35,000. Located just 2 mi (3 km) south of the Broome town centre at 56 ft (17 m) elevation on the shores of Roebuck Bay, the airport functions as the gateway to Cable Beach, Cape Leveque, the Dampier Peninsula, the Bungle Bungle Range, and the wider West Kimberley pearling, cattle, and tourism economies. Broome's unusually large-for-its-population airport is driven by its role as a transit point for the offshore oil-and-gas industry, Aboriginal communities across the Kimberley, and a strong international-leisure catchment. The airport handles 11 routes across 9 destinations through 6 airlines. Qantas, Virgin Australia, QantasLink, Airnorth, and Skippers Aviation provide the bulk of scheduled service, with the dominant routes being Perth (a 2.5-hour segment operated multiple times daily), Darwin, and the regional Kimberley network serving Kununurra, Derby, Halls Creek, and Fitzroy Crossing. Charter and fly-in-fly-out operations also generate substantial movements supporting the offshore North West Shelf and Browse Basin energy operations as well as seasonal pearling-industry logistics. The single asphalt runway 10/28 measures 7,769 ft (2,368 m), sufficient for Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 series narrow-bodies. The terminal is a modest single-building facility distinctive for its corrugated-iron architecture that references Broome's pearling-era Chinatown heritage. Broome's proximity to the town centre is a notable feature — the airport was the site of a 1942 Japanese air raid that destroyed a large number of refugee flying-boats in Roebuck Bay, and the wreckage remains visible at low tide as a registered historical site. The Dry Season (May to October) is the peak tourism window when capacity frequently sells out months in advance.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Broome

Public transportation

No dedicated public bus route serves the airport terminal directly. The Broome Explorer Bus tourist service, which circulates between town, Cable Beach, and other key locations, has a stop a short walk from the airport. Many accommodations and tour operators offer pre-booked shuttle services for guests.

Taxis & rideshare

A dedicated taxi rank sits directly outside the arrivals area. Broome Taxis meets all arriving flights. The run into central Broome or Cable Beach typically takes 5 to 10 minutes given the airport's proximity to town. Rideshare penetration in Broome is limited.

Rental cars

Major rental agencies including Avis, Budget, Hertz, and Thrifty maintain service desks inside the arrivals hall. 4WD hire is popular for onward Kimberley travel on the Gibb River Road and Cape Leveque track; advance booking is essential during the May to October peak season when demand routinely exceeds supply.
