Sultan Hasanuddin International serves Makassar, the largest city in eastern Indonesia and the historic commercial capital of Sulawesi. The airport is named for the 17th-century Gowa sultan who resisted Dutch colonial expansion, and its role in the modern Indonesian aviation network mirrors that history: it is the primary aerial gateway connecting Java's dense central economy to the vast, less-developed eastern archipelago, including the islands of Sulawesi, Maluku, and western Papua. Makassar's port city status gives the airport significant cargo traffic serving regional trade. Two runways — the primary at 3,100 m (10,171 ft) — and a modern terminal that opened in 2008 handle approximately 80 routes to 39 destinations across 14 airlines. The network is almost entirely domestic: Jakarta, Surabaya, Denpasar, Balikpapan, and Manado anchor high-frequency routes, with onward feeder service to smaller eastern Indonesian destinations including Sorong, Manokwari, Ambon, and Kendari. International service is limited to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore plus seasonal Hajj charters to Jeddah; UPG is one of Indonesia's designated Hajj embarkation airports, which triggers the largest widebody movements of the year during the pilgrimage season. Lion Air, Batik Air, Citilink, Garuda Indonesia, Super Air Jet, Wings Air, and Sriwijaya Air lead the carrier mix. The airport acts as a regional hub for Lion Air Group's eastern operations and hosts a TNI-AU (Indonesian Air Force) base — Hasanuddin Air Force Base — on the opposite side of the field, a dual-use arrangement common in Indonesia. Passenger traffic reached approximately 8.5M in 2023, making it consistently Indonesia's fourth- or fifth-busiest airport after Jakarta, Denpasar, Surabaya, and Medan.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Ujung Pandang

Public transportation

DAMRI airport buses connect the terminal to central Makassar, including the Central Business District, Mal Ratu Indah, and the Tol Reformasi transit hub. Fares are low (typically 25,000–35,000 IDR) and services run frequently. The Makassar Airport Train (Kereta Api Bandara), part of the Trans-Sulawesi railway project under staged construction, provides a rail link to Maros — the first operational commuter rail on Sulawesi.

Taxis & rideshare

Fixed-price coupon taxis operate from counters in the Arrivals hall with zone-based pricing. Grab and Gojek ride-hailing services have designated pickup zones and are typically cheaper. A trip to Makassar city center (25 km) takes 45–60 minutes and costs 120,000–180,000 IDR by coupon taxi. App-based services run 80,000–130,000 IDR.

Rental cars

TRAC Astra Rent a Car and several local operators maintain desks in the Arrivals hall. Renting a car with a driver remains the standard foreign-visitor approach; self-drive is uncommon due to traffic conditions and limited English signage. An International Driving Permit is required for self-drive rentals. Daily rates including driver and fuel typically run 550,000–800,000 IDR.
