Philip S. W. Goldson International — named in 1990 for the independence-era politician — is Belize's only international airport and the country's single commercial gateway for both long-haul and regional traffic. A 2,950 m (9,678 ft) asphalt runway, upgraded with a full overlay and extended safety areas in the 2010s, handles Boeing 737 and 757 widebody-equivalent operations without restriction, which is what elevates a nation of under 450,000 people into the ranks of the 534 largest airports worldwide. About 14 airlines operate roughly 31 routes to 25 destinations (2026), heavily weighted toward U.S. gateways: American (Miami, Charlotte, Dallas), United (Houston, Newark), Delta (Atlanta), Southwest, JetBlue, Alaska, and Frontier all maintain scheduled service, supplemented by Copa from Panama City, Avianca from San Salvador, TAG from Guatemala, and Tropic Air for domestic and San Pedro connections. Annual throughput hovers near 1.3M passengers, with peaks tied to Caribbean cruise season and dive tourism to the Belize Barrier Reef (a UNESCO site 30 km offshore). The two-storey terminal opened in 1990 and received a concourse extension with new jet bridges and duty-free expansion completed in 2023. BZE is also the operating base for the Belize Defence Force Air Wing and serves as the country's de facto emergency-response hub for hurricanes — a role that requires it to maintain Category 7 rescue-and-firefighting coverage year-round.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Belize City

Public transportation

No direct public bus enters the terminal grounds. Reaching the national bus network requires a 20-minute taxi transfer to Belize City's Novelo's terminal, from which frequent buses run to Belmopan, San Ignacio, Orange Walk, Corozal, and Dangriga. The northern highway stop is walkable (about 2 km) but not recommended with luggage.

Taxis & rideshare

Licensed green-plate taxis wait at the arrivals curb. Fares are government-regulated on a zone basis: Belize City centre roughly BZ$50 (US$25, 15 km / 9 mi, 20 minutes), water-taxi terminals BZ$55, Belmopan BZ$170. Confirm the rate at the dispatch stand before departure.

Rental cars

Crystal, Budget, Avis, Hertz, Thrifty, and several local firms operate counters in arrivals with lots immediately outside. Advance booking is strongly advised in high season (December–April). 4x4 is recommended for unpaved roads toward Hopkins or Mountain Pine Ridge.
