Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero International, commonly known as San Salvador International or El Salvador International, is the primary airport of El Salvador and the dominant hub of Avianca El Salvador — ranked by BigAirports as one of the three principal connecting airports of Central America alongside Panama-Tocumen and San José. Located 40 km southeast of central San Salvador near Comalapa and San Luis Talpa at 101 ft (31 m) elevation on the Pacific coastal plain, SAL handles roughly 4M passengers annually through a single unified terminal. A single 10,500 ft (3,200 m) asphalt runway (07/25) serves the full operation, dimensioned for narrow-body operations which make up the vast majority of traffic, with occasional wide-body service on select US long-haul and cargo routes. The terminal has been progressively expanded under a master plan that is adding a new concourse, remote gates and a rehabilitated passenger experience. The airport is the centerpiece of El Salvador's ambitious Pacific Airport Development plan which positions SAL as a logistics and passenger hub leveraging the country's dollarization, Bitcoin-legal-tender framework and strategic location. SAL's 143 routes to 52 destinations across 30 airlines reflect its function as Avianca's secondary Central American connecting hub, complementing Bogotá and operating significant frequencies to San José, Guatemala City, Tegucigalpa, Managua, Panama City, Mexico City and extensive US service to Miami, Houston, Washington-Dulles, Los Angeles, New York-JFK, Dallas-Fort Worth, Atlanta, Orlando, Chicago and Newark. American, United, Delta, Spirit, Frontier, JetBlue (seasonal), Copa, Aeroméxico, Volaris and Iberia (via Madrid) add further capacity. Diaspora traffic to the US West and East Coasts makes up a substantial share of demand, and SAL's role as an emerging regional tech and business gateway is reinforcing its strategic importance.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from San Salvador (San Luis Talpa)

Public transportation

Public bus Route 138 and the air-conditioned Route 138-A 'especial' connect the airport to central San Salvador for a fare of a few US dollars, with the bus stop located across the parking lot from the terminal. The journey is 45–75 minutes depending on traffic and the service can be crowded — not ideal for heavy luggage. There is no rail link.

Taxis & rideshare

The airport's authorized taxi operator Taxis ACACYA staffs a booth immediately outside Arrivals with fixed-rate fares to major destinations — typical runs are USD 25–40 to San Salvador for a 40–50 minute journey. Confirm the fare at the booth before boarding. Uber operates legally in El Salvador with designated pickup areas and commonly quotes lower fares, though availability drops on late-night arrivals.

Rental cars

Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Sixt and local operators maintain counters inside the arrivals hall. A valid driver's license, passport and credit card are required — El Salvador accepts foreign licenses for short-term visitors. The CA-2 Coastal Highway from the airport to San Salvador is modern and well-signed; onward Pan-American Highway access is straightforward.
