Cagliari Elmas Airport is the principal commercial airport for Sardinia and the busiest of the three airports on the Italian island, serving the capital Cagliari's roughly 420,000 metropolitan residents and drawing catchment from the entire southern half of Sardinia including the Costa Rei, Chia, Pula, and Villasimius coastal zones. Located 4.3 mi (7 km) northwest of downtown Cagliari at just 13 ft (4 m) elevation at the edge of the Santa Gilla lagoon, CAG handles 93 routes across 65 destinations through 28 airlines — a destination count unusually high for an island airport reflecting both heavy Italian domestic connectivity and substantial European tourism demand. Ryanair and Volotea (the Spanish-based small-city specialist) are the dominant operators by movements, with easyJet, Wizz Air, Vueling, Eurowings, Transavia, and ITA Airways all running substantial service. The core network concentrates on Italian domestic trunk routes — Rome–Fiumicino, Milan–Linate and Malpensa, Bologna, Venice, Naples, Pisa, Turin, Verona, Bergamo, Palermo, Catania — subsidized in part under the Italian territorial-continuity regime that guarantees affordable mainland access for Sardinian residents, a regulated route-support structure unique in European aviation. European leisure service expands dramatically in summer, with seasonal connections to London, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, Geneva, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Madrid, Barcelona, and multiple Eastern European markets driving Sardinia's April–October tourism peak. The airfield operates a single asphalt runway — 14/32 at 9,196 ft (2,803 m) — adequate for all narrowbody operations with occasional widebody charter traffic. A single passenger terminal handles all commercial movements, organized around a linear concourse with consolidated check-in and security. The airport is directly connected to Cagliari's rail network via the Elmas Aeroporto station, located a short covered-walkway distance from the terminal — an unusually convenient rail-air integration for an Italian secondary airport. CAG is operated by SOGAER, the Cagliari airport authority. Sardinia's insular geography and limited ferry capacity make CAG, Olbia (OLB), and Alghero (AHO) combined the critical aviation lifeline for the island's 1.6M residents and the backbone of its tourism-dependent economy.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Cagliari

Public transportation

The most efficient public-transit option is the train. Elmas Aeroporto station is located a 5-min walk from the terminal via a covered pedestrian walkway. Trenitalia regional services run to Cagliari's main station at Piazza Matteotti every 20 min during peak hours with a journey time of just 6–10 min and a fare of EUR 1.30. From Cagliari Centrale, onward rail connections serve Olbia, Sassari, and Oristano. This is the fastest and most affordable option into the city center.

Taxis & rideshare

Taxis are readily available 24/7 at the official rank directly outside the arrivals level. Fares are metered at Italian municipal rates with an airport pickup surcharge. Typical fares run EUR 15–20 to Cagliari city center (10–15 min), EUR 40–60 to Poetto beach and Villasimius (30–45 min), EUR 70–100 to Chia and Pula resort zones, and EUR 130–180 to Costa Rei and the southeastern coast. Uber does not operate in Sardinia; only licensed NCC (noleggio con conducente) private hire drivers can be prebooked.

Rental cars

Numerous car rental companies operate at CAG with counters in the arrivals hall and vehicles in a dedicated nearby lot. Major international providers — Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt, Budget, Enterprise — operate alongside Italian firms such as Maggiore, Locauto, Goldcar, and Winrent. Pre-booking online is strongly recommended during summer peak when walk-up rates can reach 3–4× advance prices. A valid EU or other internationally recognized driver license and credit card are required. Sardinian road conditions are generally good on main coastal highways, though many popular beach access roads are narrow and winding, and compact vehicles are preferred.
