Tunis-Carthage International Airport is the principal international gateway to Tunisia and the busiest airport in the country, located in the Tunis suburb of Carthage 5 mi (8 km) northeast of the city center and directly beside the ruins of ancient Carthage. TUN handles 126 routes to 67 destinations with 38 airlines. The airport serves a catchment that includes the entire Greater Tunis metropolitan region of roughly 2.7 million residents and, via onward domestic aviation and road connections, the broader Tunisian population of 12 million. Tunisia's compact geography, Mediterranean coast tourism economy, and substantial diaspora (notably in France, Italy, and Germany) together drive TUN's traffic profile — a mix of leisure, visiting-friends-and-relatives, and north-south Mediterranean business demand. Tunisair — the national flag carrier — operates its principal hub at TUN, using the airport as the base for its domestic, Maghreb, sub-Saharan African, European, and limited Middle East network. Nouvelair Tunisie operates a major charter and leisure base. Other operators include Tunisair Express (regional turboprop subsidiary), Air France, Alitalia successor ITA Airways, Lufthansa, Brussels Airlines, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Saudia, Royal Air Maroc, Transavia, Ryanair (limited service), Vueling, Air Algérie, Egypt Air, and Air Malta. The network concentrates on France (Paris CDG, Orly, Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse, Nice, Strasbourg, Bordeaux), Italy, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, sub-Saharan Africa (Dakar, Abidjan, Bamako, Nouakchott), and Istanbul as primary long-haul one-stop. The airfield sits at 22 ft (7 m) elevation with two asphalt runways: 01/19 at 10,499 ft (3,200 m) and 11/29 at 9,318 ft (2,840 m). The main integrated terminal has been progressively expanded and modernized. TUN is also aviation-historically significant as one of the oldest commercial airports in North Africa, tracing its civil origins to 1940s-era French colonial aviation and subsequently serving as the backbone of independent Tunisian civil aviation from 1956. The airport's proximity to Carthage's archaeological sites — including the Antonine Baths and Byrsa Hill — gives it a unique cultural-heritage setting among major international airports.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Tunis

Public transportation

SNT public bus line 35 and TUT line 635 connect TUN to central Tunis, terminating at Avenue Habib Bourguiba and the Tunis Marine TGM (Tunis-Goulette-Marsa) light-rail terminus. Fares are very low (approximately TND 1–2) but service is crowded and not luggage-friendly. The TGM light-rail provides onward service to La Goulette, Carthage (Hannibal, Dermech, Byrsa stations), Sidi Bou Said, and La Marsa along the coastal suburbs. The Tunis Métro Léger tram network does not serve the airport directly; the nearest stop requires a transfer via bus or taxi.

Taxis & rideshare

Official yellow metered taxis queue at the rank directly outside the Arrivals hall 24/7. The trip to central Tunis takes 15–25 min depending on traffic. Typical fares: TND 12–20 to Avenue Habib Bourguiba and the central medina, TND 18–28 to La Marsa and Sidi Bou Said, TND 30–50 to Hammamet (60–75 min), TND 60–90 to Sousse (120 min). Passengers should insist the driver uses the meter (al-contour), as unmetered fare negotiation is a common source of overcharging at airports. Bolt ride-hailing operates in Tunis with competitive pricing.

Rental cars

All major international rental brands (Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Europcar, Budget) plus a strong field of Tunisian operators (Express Car, Sahara Rent a Car, Mattei, TT Location) operate desks in the Arrivals hall. A valid driver's license, passport, and credit card are required; an International Driving Permit is advisable though not always strictly required. Tunisian driving rules are standard right-hand-traffic European style, though road conditions outside the Greater Tunis motorway network degrade quickly and GPS coverage can be limited. Advance booking is recommended during the May–October tourist season.
