Catania-Fontanarossa Airport — formally Catania Vincenzo Bellini Airport after the Catanian opera composer — is the principal airport of Sicily and the busiest airport in southern Italy, located 2 mi (3 km) south of central Catania. CTA handles 129 routes to 83 destinations operated by 47 airlines, an unusually high airline count that reflects Sicily's dominant role as a pan-European leisure destination and the island's substantial Sicilian-diaspora originating traffic from northern Europe, mainland Italy, and the Americas. The airport sits at the foot of Mount Etna — Europe's most active volcano — making CTA one of the world's only major airports with recurring operational disruption from volcanic-ash and tephra fall, occasionally closing runways during major Etna eruptive phases. Ryanair and Wizz Air operate substantial bases at CTA, with Ryanair in particular running one of its largest Italian operations at the airport. Other major carriers include ITA Airways, easyJet, Vueling, Volotea, Lufthansa, Air France-KLM, Turkish Airlines, Tunisair, Aeroitalia, Neos, Blue Air, and a long tail of European leisure and charter operators. Scheduled long-haul service is limited — CTA's business is overwhelmingly intra-European, Mediterranean, and intra-Italian — but New York service via ITA Airways and Neos has operated seasonally. The airfield sits at 39 ft (12 m) elevation with a single 7,989 ft (2,435 m) asphalt runway, 08/26, directly beside the Ionian coast with an unusual overwater short-final geometry. The primary passenger facility is Terminal A, with Terminal C handling overflow and some low-cost operations. CTA has expanded significantly over the past two decades but remains capacity-constrained at peak summer, when Sicilian tourism reaches its annual maximum; a new expanded terminal is under development. The airport's operational resilience is a regular storyline — Etna ashfall has forced full closures lasting anywhere from hours to days, and the airport has also contended with repeated fire and smoke events affecting terminal operations.

Ground transport options from Catania

Public transportation

The AMTS Alibus shuttle runs every 25 min between CTA and central Catania via Stazione Centrale, with onboard luggage space and tickets sold on board or via app for approximately EUR 4. Intercity coach lines including Interbus, SAIS Autolinee, AST, and Etna Trasporti depart directly from the forecourt with regular service to Taormina, Syracuse, Palermo, Agrigento, Enna, Messina, and Ragusa — effectively establishing CTA as the coach hub for eastern Sicily. A local train station (Catania Aeroporto-Fontanarossa) serves regional rail connections north toward Messina and south toward Syracuse.

Taxis & rideshare

Licensed taxis operated by Radio Taxi Catania queue at the rank outside Terminal A 24/7. Metered fares apply, with typical costs of EUR 20–30 to central Catania (10–15 min), EUR 80–110 to Taormina (60 min), EUR 80–100 to Syracuse (60 min), and EUR 130–170 to Ragusa. Night, Sunday, and luggage surcharges apply under the Italian fare structure. Uber operates only in premium NCC mode in Catania; licensed NCC (noleggio con conducente) services can be pre-booked online. Fare confirmation before departure is advisable for longer intercity runs.

Rental cars

An unusually dense rental-car market — all major international brands (Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Europcar, Budget, Enterprise) plus a strong field of Sicilian operators (Sicily by Car, Autonoleggio Goldcar, Locauto, Italy Car Rent, Maggiore) — operates from desks in the arrivals hall with vehicles collected from a dedicated off-terminal rental lot reached by a free shuttle. Sicily is one of Italy's most rental-driven tourism markets given the island's dispersed geography, Baroque-town itineraries (Noto, Modica, Ragusa), Etna road access, and the need to reach coastal destinations not well served by rail. Advance booking is essential from April through October.
