Malta International Airport is the sole commercial airport serving the Republic of Malta, making it one of very few single-airport nations in Europe and giving MLA an unusually high per-capita passenger throughput — roughly 8.9M passengers (2024) across 195 weekly routes to 116 destinations on 45 airlines, equivalent to about 16 annual passengers for every Maltese resident. The airport is located in Luqa, 8 km (5 mi) southwest of Valletta, occupying the site of the former RAF Luqa airbase that played a pivotal defensive role during the Axis siege of Malta in the Second World War. MLA is the operational base of Air Malta's successor, KM Malta Airlines (launched in 2024), plus the Mediterranean hub for Ryanair, Wizz Air, and a significant Lufthansa Technik maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility that handles widebody heavy checks for airlines across Europe and the Middle East. Two runways — a primary 11,627 ft (3,544 m) strip (13/31) and a 7,799 ft (2,377 m) crosswind (05/23) — provide substantial spare capacity for the airport's current traffic, with the longer runway sized to handle widebody diversions from regional Italian airports when needed. Malta's 316 km² (122 sq mi) land area sits 80 km (50 mi) south of Sicily and 290 km (180 mi) north of Libya, giving MLA a unique geographic position as the southernmost EU airport and a natural Mediterranean transit point between North Africa, the Middle East, and continental Europe. The airport's 300 ft (91 m) elevation on the high plateau above the island's coastal cliffs imposes no performance constraints. Network reach is dominated by short-haul leisure traffic to the UK, Italy, Germany, France, and Spain, supplemented by regional service to Tunis, Tripoli, Istanbul, Tel Aviv, and Cairo — reflecting Malta's distinctive cultural and economic position at the crossroads of three continents.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Valletta

Public transportation

Malta Public Transport operates comprehensive bus service from stops immediately outside the main terminal. Express routes prefixed 'X' (X1, X2, X3, X4) connect MLA to Valletta, Sliema, St Julian's, Mellieħa, Buġibba, and the Gozo ferry terminal at Ċirkewwa — journey times run 30–60 minutes depending on destination. Tickets are purchased at the airport kiosk or directly on the bus; a two-hour single ticket costs €2.50 in summer and €1.50 in winter.

Taxis & rideshare

Official airport taxis operate on a fixed-fare pre-paid system with tickets purchased from the dedicated booth in the Welcomers' Hall — fares are non-negotiable and based on destination zones, typically €15–25 to Valletta or Sliema in 15–25 minutes. Ride-hailing via Bolt, Uber, and eCabs is popular and generally less expensive, operating from designated curbside pickup areas.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Europcar, and several local Maltese operators occupy desks in the Welcomers' Hall, with pickup at the adjacent rental lot. Advance booking is strongly advised during the May–October peak season. An International Driving Permit is recommended alongside non-EU licenses. Malta drives on the left, a legacy of British colonial rule, which may be unfamiliar to continental European visitors.
