Bari Karol Wojtyła International is the primary airport of the Apulia region and the busiest airport on Italy's southern Adriatic coast — ranked by BigAirports as the dominant gateway of southern Italy outside Naples and a major Ryanair crew base. Located 8 km northwest of central Bari at 193 ft (59 m) elevation in the Palese area, BRI handles roughly 7.5M passengers annually through a unified terminal that has been progressively expanded since its 2005 rebuild and renamed in 2005 after Pope John Paul II (Karol Wojtyła). A single 9,843 ft (3,000 m) asphalt runway (07/25) serves the full operation and is dimensioned for narrow-body and smaller wide-body movements. The terminal operates a single landside forecourt with 37 check-in counters and a post-security airside pier with 14 boarding gates, a configuration scaled for the airport's predominantly point-to-point low-cost traffic. Aeroporti di Puglia (AdP) operates BRI alongside Brindisi-Casale (BDS), Foggia-Gino Lisa (FOG) and Grottaglie, presenting Apulia as an integrated regional airport system. BRI's 145 routes to 106 destinations across 33 airlines is a notably broad map for its size, produced by Ryanair's substantial base presence — Bari is one of Ryanair's largest Italian bases with multiple aircraft stationed and routes across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Wizz Air, easyJet, ITA Airways, Lufthansa, Air France, KLM, Turkish Airlines, Austrian and Volotea add further capacity. The route map spans major Italian cities, most Western European capitals, several Eastern European destinations, Tel Aviv, Tirana, Istanbul and seasonal Mediterranean leisure markets. BRI's role as the aviation access point for Apulia tourism — the Salento coast, Matera, Alberobello trulli, Lecce baroque — and its growing function as a Balkan-Italian diaspora hub reinforce its strategic importance.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Bari

Public transportation

Ferrotramviaria operates the Ferrovia Bari Nord direct train service from the airport station (a short covered walk from the terminal) to Bari Centrale in 15–20 minutes for EUR 5, running roughly every 30–60 minutes. AMTAB city bus Line 16 is a cheaper but slower option (45–60 minutes) and Tempesta Autoservizi shuttle coaches run to Bari Centrale in 25–30 minutes.

Taxis & rideshare

Nuova Co.Ta.Ba. and Apulia Taxi operate the official rank directly outside Arrivals with metered fares plus fixed rates to key destinations — typical trips run EUR 25–30 to Bari center, EUR 30–35 to Bari port (for Greece and Albania ferries) and EUR 40–50 to Polignano a Mare. The journey takes 20–30 minutes. Uber operates in Bari only in limited premium configurations.

Rental cars

Sixt, Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Maggiore, Locauto and Goldcar maintain desks inside the arrivals hall with vehicles collected from the dedicated rental-car parking lot a short walk away. An EU license or International Driving Permit plus home-country license is required. Italy enforces strict ZTL (limited-traffic zone) cameras in historic city centers — the rental agent can advise on Bari, Lecce and Matera restrictions.
