Moi International, on the mainland across the Likoni Channel from Mombasa Island, is Kenya's second-busiest airport and East Africa's principal coastal gateway. The main 3,350 m (10,991 ft) asphalt runway accommodates widebody long-haul aircraft without payload restriction, and combined with a secondary 1,363 m strip for general aviation it gives MBA the dual-runway footprint that most airports of its passenger tier lack. Annual throughput of roughly 1.8M (2023) and the widebody capability together justify its inclusion in the 534 largest. The route map reflects Mombasa's tourism economy: Kenya Airways anchors domestic and regional service to Nairobi (Wilson and JKIA), Jambojet operates the busiest low-cost trunk to Nairobi, and international traffic is dominated by charter and scheduled leisure flights — Condor, Edelweiss, Eurowings Discover, Turkish Airlines, Ethiopian, and Qatar Airways among them. Some 17 airlines operate 19 destinations across 29 scheduled routes (2026), with seasonal European charter volume spiking between October and March to feed the Diani, Watamu, and Malindi beach resorts. The original 1979 terminal was supplemented by a dedicated international pier in 2017, doubling covered area and adding jet bridges. MBA serves as Kenya Airways' coastal base, Kenya Coast Guard aviation support, and the operational hub for the Pwani region's air-ambulance network. Its runway also functions as the designated widebody alternate for Nairobi JKIA whenever the capital's single commercial runway is closed, which places MBA on standby infrastructure duty for the entire East African Community.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Mombasa

Public transportation

Matatu minibuses stop on Airport Road, about 500 m from arrivals, with routes toward Changamwe and onward to Likoni ferry and Mombasa Island. Larger private buses run along the main Nairobi–Mombasa highway 1 km out. Both are cheap but cramped; pre-arranged resort shuttles are the default for Diani and Malindi travelers.

Taxis & rideshare

Official airport taxis and ride-hailing (Uber, Bolt, Little) serve the arrivals curb. Fares to Mombasa Island run roughly KSh 1,500–2,500 (20–40 minutes depending on ferry or Dongo Kundu bypass traffic), to Diani KSh 3,500–5,000 (90 minutes including Likoni ferry or bypass), Malindi KSh 8,000–12,000. Negotiate before boarding for non-app taxis.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, Europcar, and Kenyan operators such as Market Car Hire maintain desks in arrivals. 4x4 is recommended for the coastal hinterland. An International Driving Permit is required; self-drive on the Nairobi–Mombasa highway is feasible but many visitors prefer chauffeured hires.
