Hamad International is the home hub of Qatar Airways and one of the world's principal long-haul transfer hubs, handling roughly 52.7M passengers (2024) and repeatedly winning Skytrax's 'World's Best Airport' title (2021, 2022, 2024) — a distinction held against Singapore Changi, Seoul Incheon, and Tokyo Haneda. DOH sits 15 km (9 mi) southeast of central Doha on 2,200 ha (5,400 acre) of largely reclaimed land at 13 ft (4 m) elevation on the Persian Gulf coast, opened in 2014 to replace the old Doha International Airport on an adjacent site. Qatar Airways (Oneworld) operates its entire global network of more than 170 destinations from a single concourse complex at DOH, connecting Europe-Asia, Africa-Asia, Americas-Asia, and Australia-Europe flows on an ultra-long-haul, high-frequency, single-transfer model. The strategic proposition — like Emirates at DXB and Etihad at AUH — is geographic: DOH sits within an eight-hour flight of roughly two-thirds of the world's population. The route network reaches 183 destinations across 54 airlines, one of the widest destination counts of any single-hub airport globally. Two parallel runways — 16L/34R at 15,912 ft (4,850 m, one of the longest commercial runways in the world) and 16R/34L at 13,944 ft (4,250 m) — support a passenger complex centered on the 600,000 sqm (6.5M sqft) Passenger Terminal and its landmark 'Orchard' garden concourse extension opened for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The iconic Lamp Bear (Urs Fischer, 7 m / 23 ft tall, 18-tonne bronze-cast teddy bear under a yellow lamp, purchased by Qatar for a reported US$6.8M) sits airside as an identifying landmark. Expansion Phase B is lifting capacity from 50M to 70M by 2030.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Doha

Public transportation

Doha Metro Red Line terminates inside the terminal building at Hamad International Airport station, reaching DECC (central Doha) in about 25 minutes for QAR 2 (standard) or QAR 10 (Gold Club). Trains run every 3–7 minutes from 06:00 to 23:00 (Friday from 14:00). Mowasalat Karwa public buses serve the Bus Pavilion to the right of Arrivals. Both modes require a rechargeable Karwa Smartcard available at airport kiosks.

Taxis & rideshare

Karwa turquoise taxis are the official regulated service, queuing 24/7 at the Taxi Pavilion to the left of Arrivals with metered fares (QAR 25 airport pickup fee plus roughly QAR 1.6 per km). Central Doha runs QAR 55–80 in 20–30 minutes. Uber and Careem operate via app from designated pickup zones.

Rental cars

Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, Thrifty, and local operators have counters on the ground floor of Arrivals. Advance online booking is advised. GCC-country licences are accepted directly; most other nationalities require an International Driving Permit alongside the home-country licence for rentals beyond one week.
