King Abdulaziz International is Saudi Arabia's busiest airport and the principal gateway for the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages — a role that shapes nearly every aspect of its design and operation. JED serves 184 direct destinations across 82 airlines, one of the densest route networks in the Middle East, and handles massive seasonal traffic surges when the airport processes several million pilgrims during the annual Hajj and a continuous year-round Umrah flow to nearby Makkah, 70 km east. The Hajj Terminal, opened in 1981 and designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, is one of the most architecturally significant airport structures ever built: 210 Teflon-coated fiberglass tents cover 500,000 m² of open-air pilgrim processing space, a structure so distinctive it won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture. The adjacent new Terminal 1, opened in 2019 as a USD 7.2B project, handles all commercial traffic in a single integrated building of 810,000 m² — one of the largest airport terminals in the world by floor area — replacing the legacy North and South terminals. Three parallel runways of 13,123 ft (4,000 m), 13,123 ft (4,000 m), and 12,467 ft (3,800 m) handle simultaneous operations and Hajj-week surge capacity. JED sits at 48 ft (15 m) elevation on the Red Sea coast 19 km north of central Jeddah. Saudia operates its primary hub here with SkyTeam long-haul service to the U.S., Europe, and Asia; flyadeal, flynas, and all major Gulf and European carriers maintain strong schedules. The Haramain High-Speed Railway connects JED directly to Makkah in 75 minutes and Madinah in 140 minutes, making Jeddah unique among global airports in having integrated rail transit to a pilgrimage destination rather than a commercial city center.

Ground transport options from Jeddah

Public transportation

The Haramain High-Speed Railway station sits adjacent to Terminal 1, with trains to Makkah in 75 minutes (SAR 40) and Madinah in 140 minutes (SAR 150), running every 30–90 minutes 05:00–23:00. SAPTCO (Saudi Public Transport Company) coaches serve central Jeddah and intercity routes to Riyadh, Dammam, and Taif from the ground-transportation forecourt. Free inter-terminal shuttle buses run 24/7 between T1 and the Hajj Terminal.

Taxis & rideshare

Official airport taxis queue 24/7 outside the arrivals halls. Fares are metered but unofficial negotiation is common, and confirming meter use before departure is strongly advised. Central Jeddah typically runs SAR 70–100 in 25–40 minutes; the Corniche and downtown hotels SAR 90–130. Uber and Careem operate from designated pickup zones with app-based pricing, which is generally the preferred option for visitors.

Rental cars

Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Budget, Europcar, and local providers including Yelo and Theeb operate counters in the Terminal 1 arrivals hall. A valid driver's license, passport, and credit card are required, and International Driving Permits are accepted alongside the home license. Pre-booking is strongly advised during Hajj and Ramadan periods when fleets run at near-full utilization.
