Martinique Aimé Césaire International Airport is the principal airport of the French Caribbean region of Martinique and one of the two largest French overseas-territory airports in the Americas (alongside Pointe-à-Pitre PTP). Named in 2007 for the Martinican poet, anticolonial essayist, and former mayor of Fort-de-France Aimé Césaire, FDF handles 34 scheduled routes to 21 nonstop destinations operated by 17 airlines — high airline diversity that reflects extensive European, Caribbean, and North American connectivity. The airport operates a single 9,843 ft (3,000 m) lighted asphalt runway 10/28 at 16 ft (5 m) elevation at Le Lamentin, 12 km (7.5 mi) southeast of Fort-de-France. The 3,000 m strip supports full widebody operations, and daily Air France, Air Caraïbes, Corsair, and seasonal Air Belgium Airbus A330, A350, and Boeing 787 service to Paris-Orly makes the FDF–ORY city pair among the world's busiest transatlantic routes by annual seats — a consequence of Martinique's status as a fully integrated French region (département d'outre-mer) sharing the Euro and Schengen rules. Internationally significant as the transatlantic aviation gateway to a French Caribbean economy built on tourism, rum, and banana export logistics, and as a connecting hub for Air Antilles and Air Caraïbes inter-island service across the Lesser Antilles. Key regional links connect FDF with Pointe-à-Pitre (PTP), Saint Martin (SXM), Saint Barts (SBH), Havana (HAV), Port-au-Prince (PAP), Santo Domingo (SDQ), Miami (MIA), and Cayenne (CAY). As an EU airport, FDF applies EASA regulation, with internal-Schengen arrivals from Paris processed without passport controls.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Fort-de-France

Public transportation

The Mozaïk public bus network operates Line A connecting the airport with Pointe Simon terminal in central Fort-de-France via a 35–45 minute route. Standard fare is EUR 1.30 for a single journey. Service is infrequent on Sundays and in the evening, limiting the bus's utility for business travelers; the stop is a 5-minute walk from the terminal forecourt.

Taxis & rideshare

A dedicated taxi rank operates 24/7 outside arrivals. Regulated fixed fares apply to major destinations: Fort-de-France city centre EUR 35–40, Trois-Îlets ferry terminal EUR 45, Les Anses-d'Arlet resort beaches EUR 65, Sainte-Anne EUR 75. A 40% night-and-Sunday surcharge applies. Credit cards are accepted by most operators.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Europcar, and the major local operator Jumbo Car compete at arrivals-hall desks, with additional mid-market players (Budget, Europcar, Hertz-Thrifty). EU driving licences are accepted without exchange. Right-hand traffic applies. The N5 expressway connects FDF directly into Fort-de-France, and the island's mountainous coastal roads make self-drive the prevailing choice for reaching northern beaches at Anse Céron and Mount Pelée.
