Hewanorra International Airport is the principal international airport of Saint Lucia and the larger of the island's two airfields, distinguished from sister airport George F. L. Charles (SLU) in Castries by its runway length, which alone can accommodate widebody long-haul service. Serving Vieux Fort on the island's southern tip, UVF handles 37 scheduled routes to 33 nonstop destinations operated by 13 airlines — an exceptionally high destination-to-route ratio that reflects heavy non-repeating seasonal leisure-carrier flying from North America and the United Kingdom. The airport operates a single 9,003 ft (2,744 m) lighted asphalt runway 10/28 at 14 ft (4 m) elevation on the island's flat southern coastal plain. British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines, JetBlue, Delta, United, Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge, WestJet, Sunwing, and Caribbean Airlines all serve UVF on scheduled or seasonal routes. Its 2,744 m strip supports Boeing 777 and Airbus A330 operations, making UVF one of the smaller Eastern Caribbean islands with year-round widebody-capable status. A new terminal is under construction under a public-private partnership between the Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA) and Canadian engineering firm DIPJET, scheduled for phased opening through 2027 to replace the capacity-constrained original terminal. Internationally significant as a transatlantic tourism gateway — UVF handles more UK-origin traffic per capita than almost any other Caribbean nation's main airport, sustained by weekly British Airways and Virgin Atlantic 787/A330 service from London Gatwick. The airport is named 'Hewanorra,' the pre-Columbian Amerindian name for the island meaning 'there where the iguana is found.' A 90-minute transfer to the main Rodney Bay and Soufrière resort areas defines the airport's operational geography.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Vieux Fort

Public transportation

Saint Lucia's minibus network (marked 'M' number plates) operates along the George Odlum Highway north of the airport perimeter, a short walk from the terminal. Minibuses run as fill-and-go services toward Castries, Soufrière, and Rodney Bay at fares of XCD 10–15 per segment. The service is not schedule-bound and is primarily used by local commuters; luggage accommodation is informal.

Taxis & rideshare

Airport taxis are regulated with published fixed fares per destination, coordinated by SLASPA. Standard fares: Soufrière XCD 200, Castries XCD 200, Rodney Bay XCD 220, Vieux Fort XCD 20. Confirm the fare with the dispatcher or driver at curbside before departure. Evening and Sunday surcharges apply.

Rental cars

Avis, Hertz, Sixt, National, and local operators West Coast Jeep & Car Rentals and Drive-a-Matic staff desks in the arrivals terminal. A mandatory temporary Saint Lucian driving permit (XCD 54) is issued at the rental counter against a home-country licence. Left-hand-traffic driving applies. The island's mountainous interior and narrow coastal highway 90-minute transfer to the northern resorts make a rental an informed rather than default choice.
