Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (HRI) is Sri Lanka's second international airport and one of the most infrastructure-heavy airfields in South Asia relative to its traffic. Opened in 2013 on a former scrubland site near Hambantota in the island's southern dry zone, it was built to relieve Colombo's Bandaranaike (CMB) and stimulate development in Mahinda Rajapaksa's home district, an ambition that has so far outrun actual demand. The airport features a 11,480 ft (3,500 m) runway capable of handling any widebody in service, a modern 70,000 sq ft (6,500 sq m) terminal designed for 1 million passengers a year, and a parallel taxiway and ramp layout sized for eventual hub operations. Scheduled traffic has been sparse and intermittent, with various carriers – including FitsAir, SriLankan Airlines and regional operators – adding and withdrawing limited flights to Dubai (DXB), Riyadh (RUH) and Colombo (CMB); the airport has been widely reported in international media as one of the world's emptiest large airports. Strategically, HRI anchors the Hambantota development corridor alongside the Chinese-operated deepwater port and the Mattala industrial zone, and Sri Lanka has periodically pitched it as a cargo, pilgrimage and diversion field. A 2024 joint-venture agreement with Indian and Russian operators was announced to revive scheduled operations. On South Asian rankings HRI sits firmly in the large-airport tier by runway length and facility scale, while remaining an outlier case study in aviation planning versus catchment.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Mattala

Public transportation

Sri Lanka Transport Board buses along the A2 and A18 corridors serve Hambantota, Tissamaharama and Weerawila, with the airport reachable via a short transfer from the main road junction rather than direct-to-terminal service. Fares are modest and paid in rupees on board; most arriving international passengers instead rely on taxis or pre-arranged hotel cars.

Taxis & rideshare

A regulated taxi rank operates at arrivals when flights are scheduled, offering fares to Hambantota town, Tissamaharama (for Yala National Park), Tangalle beach and the long run to Galle and Colombo. Rates are posted at the counter in rupees; app-based services such as PickMe operate intermittently in the region and tend to be cheaper when available.

Rental cars

Self-drive rental counters at HRI are limited given low flight volumes; most Sri Lankan rental bookings are arranged via operators in Colombo or Galle with delivery to Mattala. Many foreign visitors instead hire a car with driver, the dominant model in Sri Lanka, coordinating pickup with their safari or beach-resort booking along the southern coast.
