Minsk National Airport is the principal airport of Belarus and the busiest in the country, handling roughly 5 million passengers annually in pre-2020 years, with substantial fluctuation since due to EU sanctions and airspace restrictions that followed the forced diversion of Ryanair flight FR4978 to MSQ in May 2021 and the subsequent European Union aviation bans. MSQ is the hub for flag carrier Belavia, which operates a 737 and Embraer E-Jet fleet on routes to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Istanbul, Dubai, Tbilisi, Tel Aviv (historically), and a network of Russian and Central Asian destinations. EU, UK, US, and Ukrainian carriers have largely withdrawn; the airport's international network since 2022 has concentrated on Russia, the Middle East, Turkey, Caucasus, and Central Asia. In addition to Belavia, MSQ is served by Aeroflot, Turkish, Georgian Airways, Ural Airlines, Pegasus, FlyDubai, Uzbekistan Airways, and Air Arabia. The Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, and UAE connections have become relatively more prominent as European service has diminished. China Southern and Hainan Airlines operate to Chinese destinations, supporting the Belt-and-Road-era Belarus-China political and economic alignment. Two parallel runways, 13R/31L and 13L/31R, measure 11,811 ft (3,600 m) each — substantial capacity reflecting the airport's Soviet-era role as a major Aeroflot hub and its military alternates status. The modern terminal, built in the 1980s and significantly renovated in the 2010s ahead of the 2014 Ice Hockey World Championship, has 14 jet bridges and a recognizably Soviet-modernist architectural footprint. MSQ sits 42 km (26 mi) east of central Minsk in Smaliavichy district at an elevation of 669 ft (204 m). The airport is operated as a state enterprise under the Belarusian government.

Getting to the airport

Ground transport options from Minsk

Public transportation

Bus route 300Э (Express) runs between MSQ and Minsk Central Bus Station (Tsentralny Avtovakzal) via the M2 motorway every 30 minutes from 05:30 to 00:30 for BYN 4 (EUR 1.30), a 60-minute trip. A marshrutka (shared minibus) route 1400-TK also serves the airport with more frequent departures at higher fares. No rail service connects MSQ directly to Minsk; Minsk Passazhirsky rail station is reached via bus or taxi.

Taxis & rideshare

Licensed airport taxis queue at the rank outside Arrivals. Fares to central Minsk run BYN 80–120 (EUR 26–40) for a 50–70 minute trip; negotiating the fare before departure is recommended. Yandex Go operates widely in Minsk and typically provides more transparent pricing. International Visa and Mastercard credit cards face complications in Belarus due to Western sanctions on Belarusian banks; cash (rubles, euros, or dollars) is reliably accepted.

Rental cars

Rental availability at MSQ is limited relative to EU norms. Avis, Hertz, Europcar, and several Belarusian operators maintain counters, with international brand presence reduced since 2022. From the airport, the M2 motorway connects directly to Minsk (45 km / 28 mi west) and east to the Russian border at Redzki/Krasnaya Gorka. Belarus drives on the right. Crossing into the EU from Belarus requires a Belarusian exit inspection and EU-member-state entry at the Latvian, Lithuanian, or Polish borders.
